Dads, I need to improve my stamina. I went out biking today and got beat to the top by a 19 year old lad who was riding with one hand, and a smoke in the other looking all casual. I was knackered with sweat dripping off my helmet Whats the plan?

Whats the plan?
Realising that trying to get around under your own steam for fun is pointless, kicking back and chilling on the sofa with cans of cold beer until you develop a gut big enough to use as a beer shelf?

I realize that, I have two cars and maybe a third coming by Christmas.
I ride my bikes because I love it. I thrashed a ginger swine who's always in front of me usually down a big hill today, perhaps my added weight is giving me momentum.

No way. I was better than this, that is before I started working/studying 60 hours a week and riding my bike once a week. I think I need to crack my single speed out and put on a tiny gear (maybe a 14 or a 12) to do some ROCKY style training in the morning.

stamina should improve with regular long distance cycling. You need to take a route that you know you can manage, cycle the same route for the first week (say 3-4 times) and time yourself. Then extend the route slightly and aim to get your time down to the same time as the shorter route. I'm not necessarily saying cycle until you can't cycle any further, but take a manageable distance to you at present, eg. half way up the hill you cycled up. Do that route over and over, then extend to a km or a few km's further and work on that distance for a while. Try and push yourself to about 90-95% of what you're capable of doing, this way you won't feel crap after it and you should recover quicker if you've not burnt yourself out. That's what I'd do anyway

More words of wisdom from Mr teh Shirks. I have it on good authority that the key to a long and happy life can be found by having pie, chips and beer on a regular basis.

You need to be doing at least 40 miles per ride at an average clip of 15mph. That'll get yer stamina sorted.

Burt, I can push 180kph per day on the road no problems at 20mph. I just cant go up rocky off roads anymore without feeling knackered and wanting to get off and push!

Yuo are a fag. If you can go all day, you don't need to improve stamina, you need to improve your raw power (ie, strength). Eat more
