Picture Thumbnails

Recently I have visited a few sites that have thumbnailed images. When clicked they open in a small box which grows larger to accomodate the image in its full size. This looks rather better than pop up windows as it usually just shows the image in a small frame.

Does anyone know where i can find examples of how this is done.

Mind you reading it back, I dont describe it well do I

I like to work off recommendations rather than Google search results, its what Web 2.0 is all about.
