OK, someone talk me out of getting a 24" iMac Just been playing with one today and it's utterly brilliant. So many shiny things. The brushed aluminium finish looks much nicer than the old white too. The only thing I'd add to it is maybe another 1GB RAM. Someone stop me!

I can't stop you - they are amazing The brushed aluminium is v nice. However, you are right, more ram is good! I have an insane amount of ram in my mac, and it's a beaut However, wait a bit longer, the new OS X is coming out in october, so you'll get that pre-installed on your iMac

I will wait for Leopard but apparently if I bought now I'd get a free upgrade later. Might as well wait though. I'm seriously impressed. Everything is so well integrated and easy to use

I'm seriously impressed. Everything is so well integrated and easy to use Bit like Ubuntu? Or have you been under the spell of owning a mac meaning you're better then the cheap riff-raff using a pc? I can still install Ubuntu on a Mac The whole thing is a work of art. You can see where the likes of Compiz have "borrowed" little tricks but it's all done with such sparkle. No fuss, no spending hours trying to configure it yourself How much would a 24" monitor of that quality cost? For the money it's better value than you think, and cheaper than the equivalent Sony. Still, I'm all for sticking with Ubuntu and buying a more powerful PC. Maybe ....

Just do it! I bought a 20" iMac a few months ago after being a dedicated PC user for donkey's years and LOVE it. Unless you've used a Mac you really can't appreciate how superbly everything intergrates together and the software that comes with it is actually very good, much, much better than the crap that gets shipped with Windows. It's not just the software that is superb but the hardware too. It just works and it works really, really well. The only thing I'd say is get a much RAM as you can afford, 2GB minimum, because you'll really notice the difference especially if you use programs like Photoshop. I'd also recommend buying Firewire drives over USB ones for the simple reason that, if you are like me, you'll want to keep the USB ports free for printers, card readers, scanners etc. Seriously, buy one! Incidentally a company I deal with who build a pro audio editing system (dedicated hardware and software) that only runs in Windows bought a Mini Mac when they first came out to see if there software would run under Parallels or Bootcamp and they have told me that in the years they have had the Mac it runs Windows better, more stable, than any PC system that they ship with their systems. Yep a Mac runs Windows better than a PC!

I always wanted a mac, but my main reason for not getting one was the cost, and because it didn't/couldn't run windows.
Bootcamp came along, and I'm finding my resistance wavering!

had a mac mini and sold it - but then that wasnt replacing anything so I never really bothered with it - I can see how it could have been better, if it was the only thing I used, but I like windows just fine me.
Im thinking about a new laptop, so could be tempted by an apple, but then again might just borrow the vista laptop from work on a full time basis.

I'm seriously contemplating buying a macbook as my next laptop, and running windows via bootcamp off it.

My mate is a mac fag, he says the macbook is not a 'proper computer' and the Macbook pro is the only way to go. Seeing as one of my Lenovos has died last month, and the other Lenovo is slightly dying im wondering if a Macbook is any good. I hear the Macbook doesnt have a VGA out. What good is it ? Ive been tempted by a mac for yonks, but seeing as I rely on my PC for every piece of work I do I dont really want to buy something thats useless to me. Apples have finally come down to sensible prices over the past few months so Im thinking long and hard about it now.

If you are looking for a desktop replacement than yeah you would be better off with a Macbook Pro. If however you need a laptop that will run office apps, web browsers, watch DVD's, listen to MP3's with perhaps some light usage of programs like Photoshop/Illustrator/Quark etc than a Macbook is fine. Could you use a mac-mini with a TV ala media centre/jukebox stylee?
Yup. In fact a friend of mine does just that. He connects his Mac Mini to a Plasma Screen and watches all his films on that, has his entire music library on an external drive and uses iTunes to play them. In fact he basically uses his Plasma as a computer monitor and has wireless keyboard and mouse.

my missus has a macbook - it's nice, and is used as a desktop replacement when in the office - it's just as capable as her old iMac was - very nice indeed etc etc. It definately has VGA out, but I can't remember if I had to pay extra for that or not?!

It has vga out, but it mirrors the laptop display. The macbook pro has the option for 'extended display' so that the external monitor acts as a second desktop, in addition to the laptop display. and the pro comes in metal

This is one of those occasions when you do want an apostrophe. the mac god *is* a-calling - lose the "i", replace with a ' </interlude> Carry on
