im setting up 2 new sites soon but do i get both .com and .co.uk? what will get me the best coverage? does it really matter anymore or do i buy both so i dont get someone who buys the other domain instead of me?

If it's a UK company, and are bias to UK traffic - I buy both, promote the .com but 301 it to the ".co.uk" everytime.

I would usually buy both if I could. Depending on the subject of the site and who your target is depends on which one to host the site on. If the site is targetted for the UK market then opt for the UK as Ben said, however if the site is selling say a digital product or offering a usable service to anyone then use the .com as you'll find it'll take a lot more to get international visitors to a UK site (from my experience).
