You haven't installed anything recently that can act as a speaker albeit no obviously.
I've got a skype phone that when it installed hijacked the default speaker setting. />I've also heard of nokia phones doing the same.

So does it just stop flash sound or all sound?
Sounds like the flash player you're using is borked. Have you tried a later version (or earlier if you have the latest)

All sounds, even system sounds. Not sure about speaker beeps though.
Sorry, not making myself clear. Is it flash that causes it or anything. If you boot your system and watch a DVD does the sound die?

I reckon your S/C is whacked.
There are apps that will record everything your O/S does, as it happens, on-screen - I'm sure I have a copy but it's late. It is free though.
I didn't know this until fairly recently but apparently, if you're playing a tune that's CD quality (44KHz), and another sound - say, a sys event - suddenly butts-in, and that sys event sound is 22KHz, then the rest of your tune plays-out at 22KHz too.
It could be that your card (or whatever) is choking when this happens.
Hey, it's a theory - A bit like when ya get stuck in Tomb Raider and resort to ridiculous ideas like inspecting each and every pixel on the screen with every button combination... know worra mean like?

That would be a driver issue then? You said they're all up-to-date, but have you tried reverting to an older version?

Actually if you have reinstalled thats fairly useless, but for future ref always worth rolling back to when it was workign and recalling what you have isntalled since. Have you got the latest SP and updates from WU?

Yesterday the penguin finally squealed about an audio problem So what you're saying is that Windows is better at spotting faulty hardware

No, it just stops working after x minutes. With or without the audio being audibly accessed.
Ive been getting the same issue on a newly installed XP install. I bet its IRQ!
