I reinstalled Windows XP. And the
audio is still dying on me. All drivers up to date.

Works fine with some penguin love.

Any ideas?

You haven't
installed anything recently that can act as a speaker albeit no obviously.

I've got a skype phone that when it installed hijacked the default speaker setting.
/>I've also heard of nokia phones doing the same.

No, it just stops working
after x minutes. With or without the audio being audibly accessed.

Just did it again when I went
to youtube. Nowt in the events log but this is the second time this has happened where I've noticed using a flash player is a common link.

Just found some
similar problems on other people's pcs. Need to check Windows Audio service hasn't stop.

I shall wait for it to bomb again. Shouldn't be long.

So does it just stop
flash sound or all sound?

Sounds like the flash player you're using is borked. Have you tried a later version (or earlier if you have the latest)

Sorry, not making myself clear. Is it
flash that causes it or anything. If you boot your system and watch a DVD does the sound die?

I reckon your
S/C is whacked.

There are apps that will record everything your O/S does, as it happens, on-screen - I'm sure I have a copy but it's late. It is free
though.

I didn't know this until fairly recently but apparently, if you're playing a tune that's CD quality (44KHz), and another sound - say, a sys
event - suddenly butts-in, and that sys event sound is 22KHz, then the rest of your tune plays-out at 22KHz too.

It could be that your card (or whatever) is choking
when this happens.

Hey, it's a theory - A bit like when ya get stuck in Tomb Raider and resort to ridiculous ideas like inspecting each and every pixel on the
screen with every button combination... know worra mean like?

Cheers Mike, but

  • it doesn't happen in the penguin
  • the audio can die even if I'm not playing anything and all is quiet
  • intermittent, can
happen after 5 mins or after 5 hours
Tis a bugger

That would be a driver
issue then? You said they're all up-to-date, but have you tried reverting to an older version?

Tried System restore? Actually if you have reinstalled thats fairly useless, but for future ref always worth rolling back to when it was workign and recalling what you have isntalled since.

Have you got the latest SP and updates from WU?

Mr H, when I said up to date I meant that they're the original audio drivers that came with the lappy on a cd. All other windows stuff is up to date.

Matt, It's one of those intermittent errors that took several weeks to notice. And I've reinstalled windows so no sys restore available.

Mr Tickler is a bad man.

Yesterday the penguin finally squealed about an audio problem  Sad

Seems it's going to be a hardware problem after all. Least it's easier to sort  Tongue

Rang the supplier and they gave me a returns number (under warranty) and said send it back. They did say it will be 5 to 10 days before they can even look at it though due to their workload  fear

Poo.

So what you're saying is that Windows is better at spotting faulty hardware wink

You could put that spin on it. I prefer to say that the penguin is more robust.

Whatever way it looks as though I'll be without me lappy for a while.  crybaby

Wasn't an audio problem with linux. My mistake!

Using the penguin about 95% of the time now so no big worries.

Plus repair place talked about 5 - 10 days before they could look at it.

Windows just not worth it to me.
