If you want to connect with your msn contacts then you can use any phone that will run the gizmo mobile client. www.gizmo5.comIt wont run on a b0rked phone though, hence my need for a new phone. That dopod has WM6 with Live messenger. Anyone use WM6 yet?

Get Fring - does a couple of messaging systems in one. Also, grab yourself a couple of better task managers, etc. There are some really nice Today screen apps for Windows Mobile.
Looking at installing a WM6 ROM on my Athena. WM5 is really stable, but WM6 has some new capabilities that I want. What's WM6 like to use?

Tanty,
I cant really compare WM6 to anything as Ive been using Symbian and Linux phones for the past few years. Last time I used a windows device It was on Pocket Mobile or CE or something similar.
How do you install software on the WM phones, is it still via active sync? Also how do you end running programs like the browser, outlook etc.
Does leaving outlook to check for email every hour transfer a lot of data, just doing the server look up, logging in and checking for messages?
Ill look at Fring!

Yep. It also, really irritatingly, leaves entries in your Add/Remove Programs list on your desktop PC as well as on the device. Also how do you end running programs like the browser, outlook etc.
If you tap the X button, the program actually minimises, as you might have noticed. On my device (WM5), holding the X button for a few seconds rather than tapping it will shut down the program. There should also be a "Running Programs" entry on your start menu, which is WM's "Task Manager," where you can switch programs, shut them down, etc. Dunno how it looks in WM6, but in every version before that, it was crap. You can get a better task manager - some really good ones exist that sit on the top navbar and are much faster to access. You can also change the behaviour of the X button from your settings screen. Does leaving outlook to check for email every hour transfer a lot of data, just doing the server look up, logging in and checking for messages?
I don't imagine so, but AFAIK Windows Mobile will not automatically shut down your 3G connection afterwards, so watch your battery life. (This may be different in WM6, or you may be able to change the setting somewhere in the OS/via a utility. Never actually looked myself.) Ill look at Fring!
It's not bad. Only used it a few times, but it does work. I used it because T-Mobile strip MSN Messenger out of Win Mobile, and there's no installer to add it back! How stupid is that? There is a Skype client for WM, and obviously it does a better job, but Fring works. Trying to find a new website to get software from. PocketGear.com used to be excellent, but they've redone the site, removed all the freeware, and gone totally commercial. It's still an excellent index of commercial software, as a search for "Task Manager" will show, but I want a new site for freeware. I found some really cool and weird free apps on there before they ripped them all off. Bah.

There doesnt seem to be an X button on the keypad of mine, is it in the software? I just press the return to home buttom several times and im back. Actually, in IE there doesnt appear to be an X button either... Outlook, Im on a pay as you like scheme anyway, they let me run over my allowance by upto 50rmb so I end up owing the operator (CN mobile) until I stick more money in the account so I can play around with the Outlook setings to see if it does close. This phone is a push email equipped phone, so by all means China Mobile should support it and there is a Chinese language email client built in besides outlook. As for changing languages on MS machines - I asked you this question before, and I was quite surprised to find that I could change the system language from entirely Chinese into English with no issues whatsoever. You have to play around with the locale settings though. Cheers tanty, dont have much time to play with my phone today, but maybe tomorrow!

Very true. I do like Windows Mobile, but ActiveSync is rubbish.

COCK thats what I am. I was getting angry with my new phone as it kept 'loosing the time' i.e. going backwards 8 hours all the time. After a week Ive just figured out why - my PC's clock was set to Seattle time when I reinstalled Windows and I havent bothered to change it, ever. I even gave Dopod a call, giving them a right bollocking for selling SHITTY products.

Well bugger me, from China too! I have actually seen these 'in the wild' so to speak, but always thought they were some tard with a really old phone that took massive bank card style sim cards and cost 50p a min to dial out.

They dont make phones like they used to!
Sitting on phones has never been good for them. The only difference is you couldn't fit a Miami Vice special into your back pocket.
