I've been using my brothers Fuji FinePix S5600 today and I've found it really easy to use and it's taken some good shots (IMO). I've read some online reviews and they all seem to say good things (IMO).

It's only about £120 and I'm considering buying it. Any reason not too - or could I spend my money better?

TIA

Not really it's a very fine camera, have considered buying it myself for days when I dont want to lug the DSLR around.

That said you can get: (second hand prices)

Fuji S9500, 9MP, 28-300mm lens around £170
Fuji S7000, 6MP, 35-210mm lens around £120
Fuji S6500, 6MP, 28-300mm lens around £160
Fuji S5600 5MP, 38-380mm lens around  £140

The only 'problem' with the S5600 is that the lens only goes down to 38mm which isn't wide at all, some would say that 5MP isn't enough but it's ample for 6x4 prints and A4 so I wouldnt let that put you off. If you can afford it than the S9500 at around £170 is an exceptional buy but failing that I'd go for the S6500 over the S5600 because the lens is that bit wider (and the extra 1MP is useful)

In order of preference I'd put the above cameras as, assuming budget could afford any of them:

S9500
S6500
S5600
S7000

I'm definitely impressed with it - I particularly like the fact I could just pick it up and use it straight away. The quality of the pictures is notably better than my current camera, particularly when using the zoom. I took some 'action' shots of the kids on the trampoline and it produced some great photos.

I'm definitely not ready for a DSLR - it all sounds too complimicated for me just yet!

I think it would be worth me saving a little longer and going for one of these. We saw the S6500 in Asda brand new for £177 yesterday.

Where would be the best place to look for the camera second hand? Ebay?

EDIT: And thanks SL - you are always helpful and informative when it comes to photography.

Unfortunately for second hand cameras Ebay does still rule. Many camera stores do sell secondhand gear but sometimes their markup is a little unrealistic.

If you are anywhere near Southampton than the London Camera Exchange have a boxed S6500 for £150 http://www.lcegroup.co.uk

This site lists loads of shops that sell used camera equipment www.usedcamera.co.uk

Unfortunately I'm not much help when it comes to the webby side of things so I try to make up for that in here  wink1

ohmy ohmy Oh God I'm really tempted.......must resist......must resist.......wife will kill me

I really want a camera like this to take on holiday etc instead of lugging half a ton and a few grands worth of gear around with me and have to constantly change lenses etc but I can just imagine what the wife would say:

Me: I've seen a new camera and it's dirt cheap
Wife: But you already own a camera, is it better a better one?
Me: Umm, no....but it is smaller and lighter
Wife: So are you going to sell your other camera then?
Me: No way, I just want this other camera for when we go on holiday or when we go for days out when I don't want to lug heavy gear around
Wife: So why exactly did you buy all the expensive gear then in the first place
Me: Umm...........

Oh well, at least its a jap import.

Very good camera though, so far.

Edit:

Judging by the reviews, Mr. Lamb purchased the camera? Did his wife kill him?
