Got a nice raise (backdated a few months), so thought I'd actually buy LR3 after 'testing' for a few years.
Full version has been 50% off from Adobe for a little while - ends today I believe. So it was 150 euros.
I know LR4 is coming, but the rumoured features didn't seem to be a 'must buy immediately' for me.

Lights up your room.
And basically organises, catalogues, and edits your photos.

It's Photoshop but err, for Photos. Adobe took all (well most) of the bits in Photoshop that photographers use, injected Bridge with steroids, injected CameraRAW with even more steroids, bolted on a few extras and called it Lightroom. Basically Abobe are now implying that designers should buy Photoshop whilst photographers should buy Lightroom and possibly Photoshop Elements.

I use it to process RAW photos and then save to jpg. Can control stuff like white balance, saturation etc. You can do that in the software you usually get with the camera (DSLR or bridge / advanced point 'n shoot) but you just get more features. Good for touching up photos too. I don't run photoshop as it's too much for my needs, and for my laptop!

And you can make a virtual copy of the photo, so a black and white version, for example, without actually having two versions of the file stored. Just a bit of xml, or similar, I believe.

Can't remember the last time I fired up photoshop for work on any of my photos. Lightroom's image management is brilliant, and while there are a few photoshop tools I'd still like in there, it's image editing is pretty damn good (and I find it nicer to use than CameraRAW in photoshop - although I'm still on CS2 and it doesn't support my camera now).

Great post Jon! I have been following the effort since you started it, and although I have understood its purpose this post does a really great job solidifying the full rationale.

LR3 is still very good......but yeah LR4 is better Do Adobe do a 'free upgrade if you bought within x days of release'? At the moment my hand is hovering over the buy button for the upgrade. I can't really justify it at the moment but I WANT IT!

LR3 was on sale for about a week, for 150 (half price). There is a 30 days return period (not even sure if it applies to the digital download version though). About 34 days after the sale ends, they announce LR4, for 135.
But I can upgrade for about 70. Thanks. I knew LR4 was coming, and wasn't bothered. Thought I'd maybe spring for the upgrade (thinking I'd still be getting some sort of deal). Well sod 'em... decided to go legit, and they do that. Good job.

Same here, I've been using the Beta constantly since it came out and have never had a problem, hopefully they don't kill it in the near future so i can postpone the purchase that little longer. Oh and yeah LR3 is great, i just think LR4 has some fantastic improvements

Going to give it a go Thought you might, I remembered that you were lambasting a lack of RAW editors in linux a while back. Yes, but I haven't used Linux in about three years - on an iMac now ...which won't load the experimental build. Oh well. iPhoto it is for now...

Well I caved last night and got LR4. Ooh me likey.
What I've always liked about LR is that it's so intuitive, you don't need to read complex manuals or help files, pretty much everything just does what you think it would do. For about 3 seconds I was alarmed that the Fill and Recovery tools had disappeared but then noticed the new White, Black and Highlights and Shadows tools and realised that these did almost the same thing but better.
I have to say that when Lightroom first came out I didn't like it and thought that Apples Aperture was sooo much better. I still think that Apertures library tools stomp all over Lightroom in a big way but since version 3 Lightroom really has stormed in front of Aperture and LR4, for me, has killed off Aperture completely now.

Nothing lost by doing so and you may get something back from them They closed the case, and it says there is no appeal process (it won't reopen a new case with the same serial number). Ah well, I bet I'm not the only one to whom this has happened. Not sure if I will bother ruining the day of some low-level customer service drone.
