Thanks random person, not even in my organisation, for sending me a 3MB mail, containing two BMP screenshots from a PowerPoint presentation.

I have a 5GB mail quota and a fast connection, but still

EDIT: But at least I haven't had any back problems yet.

Yep, since Master Sickpupp came along it has progressed to sciatica down my right leg.
I now have 3 choices. Pain, long term drugs that I'm not supposed to drink on and have a raft of possible side-effects or spinal surgery and the risks it carries. Currently trying the drugs and testing what "avoid alcohol" actually means.

I went for the spinal surgery under a neurosurgeon.

I had two prolapsed disks and was getting sciatica in my left leg as well as a lot of pain.
After an MRI scan the consultant mentioned paralysis and incontinence as possible outcomes if I didn't have an op.

Not really any choice then...

Ouch, my problem is the opposite, no mention of possible paralysis unless I decide to go for surgery and it's inherent risks.

I had a similar thing after IE6 was born - lifting kids and their associated stuff about doesn't do your back any favours. I could hardly walk for a few months, but fortunately it's not as bad now. It's taken three years, and I occasionally get the sciatica pain as well but by being careful when I'm lifting I hardly notice it now.

Back pain is a horrible thing, maybe yours will sort itself out naturally.

If there'd been another option, I'd have taken it, but none of the non-surgical solutions were making any difference.

I've had in varying degrees for over 10 years now so I'm not holding my breath. It's mostly just a discomfort that I can ignore but it does properly go every so often. The sciatica was a new and unwelcome addition.

That's been a new thing with mine as well. Mine never completely goes away - it's a bugger in the mornings and late at night - but if I lift things carefully and don't overdo it, it isn't too bad. On the plus side it gets me out of a lot of horrible jobs around the house.

One of my clients is in a wheelchair courtesy of a botched back op, which I think has strengthened my resolve to see it out naturally if possible.

The back op I had a year ago has stopped my sciatic pain completely. I had one socking great prolapsed disc, it got so bad that it stopped me going to the loo one morning. I was in hospital that afternoon and had surgery that evening by a Neurosurgeon I knew as his kids went to the same school as mine!

The leg pain has stayed away for the most part but as the nerve route was bruised by the disc some ongoing leg pain does happen. If it does with my physio told me how to do a great stretch that makes the pain go away within a day.

I still get an awful lot of mechanical back pain and my mobility is quite poor. I do all the exercises and they are not improving things massively. I need to see the GP but I fear that spinal fusion may be the only solution that keeps me pain free.

What's the stretch? I realise the nerves might be completely different but I'll try anything once (as long as it's not a suggestion from Dom or Steve)

When my back was bad I'd dream of being able to dance the morris. I'm not there yet but I can wave a couple of bells about.

I lie on my side with my hip on a cushion. The lower leg is raised to 90 degrees at the hip for stability and the upper leg is stretched out. Stretch for about 5-10 seconds then rest, repeat 3 times and then roll over I push the heel out. I do this as many times as I am able.

I have tried to find a utube vid but cannot see it. I will keep looking.

Usually if you go to the doc with a bad back/sciatica they'll give you a hand out with stretches on. I've got a load, but mine all stems from doing gymnastics when little and my whole back is knackered. The little 'un putting on weight isn't helping either.

Ah that sounds similar to something I've done at pilates (told you I'd try anything)

I do wonder whether searching 'youtube' for 'videos' with 'models' with an 'upper leg stretched out' is purely physiological in nature.

It sounds the present-day equivalent of my dad 'exercising' to Mad Lizzy Webb every morning.

Pilates works for me I still do it, I am clearly better if I do the exercises than if I do not.

You obviously haven't seen me with a tension band strapped to my thighs working out to Hawkwind.

How many lists am I on?!? What with Johnathan's list, and the ones the police have, I'm building up quite a portfolio.

Thanks to the local authorities for placing a huge digital thermometer over the road right next to my bus stop. I know it's flipping cold, it doesn't help when the bus is a bit late and you point out that it's minus 20. Brrrrr.

Damn, I was glad I was wearing two pairs of gloves.
