Anyone here set up a WordPress site using Active Directory (AD) on a Windows server? Can it be done on an external website? Or is it just easier to do it internally within the same network?

Do you mean using this? http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/active-directory-integration/I've never used it but would think it would always definitely be better if on the LAN, as AD still uses NetBIOS names as far as I know, even though the directory itself is built on DNS. Might be possible on a dedicated external server with a permanent VPN link back to the LAN.

Thanks Guys Rosco I have been looking at that plugin, it looks perfect. I knew Matt could not resist, had a feeling he would be using it. Matt can you talk english for me and tell me what you mean by a non domain member Essentially it is a WordPress site to be set up so AD can be used for the login. Wold it be possible for me to set this up externally?

Depends what you mean via externally really, the machine your using to host, needs to be able to resolve by IP or DNS the name of the AD Server.

I would think so yes. It doesnt have to be an IIS server either (infact, probably best to not be)

I would think so yes. It doesnt have to be an IIS server either (infact, probably best to not be) Depends on the IIS version. 7 would be fine. We run everything on 6 for one client and they have about 12 WP sites externally and their intranet (which I may try this AD plugin on, save them losing another login!). They don't have any major issues on IIS, although the permalinks on 6 are WP written not mod-rewrite style (so includes index.php). But other than that, there's no major problem using IIS.

Oh, no doubt it can do it. But a windows server is a lot more hassle then an ubuntu in my experience to keep going.

I don't look after the server, just the web based bits and keeping PHP/MySQL up to date Was just pointing out that it wouldn't be probably best not to be IIS, it can run it fine and IIS7 is fine for it. Yes, *nix server would be better providing you have the experience to maintain and secure it. I'd rather apache or some *nix based server for it, but the techs don't have experience with anything else, so we'd be at a loss when it comes to security. Frustrating as I've been asking for IIS7 to get the rewrite module for about 3 years and move 12 standalone WP sites into a WP multisite setup.

Excellent so I know who to ask if i run into any problems Are there any plugins free or paid that will enable sharing of documents? Or any plugins you think I should check out for intranet sites?
