I've just sold a microphone on eBay in which I clearly stated that I would only post the item via trackable and insured means due to it's value (£1100) as this complies with PayPal's seller protection plan. The buyer lives just a few miles away and quite reasonably asked if he could pick it up rather than pay postage (an additional £30). I've said that as this would break the PayPal seller protection it's not something I can do as PayPal specifically say that you are not covered if you hand deliver or arrange collection in person.

I'm just thinking one step ahead here but if I were to suggest he collects in person but pays cash then, other than checking the notes are not fakes (I was thinking of agreeing to meet him in a bank and get them to verify the notes), is there any risk? It's not as if he can then say he didn't receive it, it's broken/not as described or try to reverse the payment.

Or BACS then he can't get the money back once it's cleared.

To be sure, I've asked people to bring ID before, have copied it and asked then to sign it.

If you didnt offer pick up as a delivery option, he has agreed to buy it and pay delivery. But as Whatever and yourself said - if you get cold hard cash/BACs payment and you get him to sign something, and ensure its sold as seen etc he couldnt get the cash back anyways.

I think we've casually overlooked the fact that there appears to be a microphone in existence that's worth £1100...

I find this disturbing.

I hear you, buddy.

But it's a bit crackly. Maybe you should invest in a better mic?

Actually it was worth nearer £1500 and cost over £2000 new  shocking But as professional mics go, that's only just above average in price.  shocking shocking The reason it cost so much is that it's made by Neumann (one of the, if not the best manufacturer of mics in the world), is a valve mic which is quite rare these days but which gives it a uniquely warm and rich sound that is very, very hard to beat.

If you think that price is bad, this mic requires a special cable that you can't buy off the shelf and is specific to this mic. The lead on it's own cost £220  shocking shocking shocking Believe me, when you damage one of these cables you get a whole new kinda sick feeling come over you  Sad

Yeah, a bit smaller, darker in colour and with a wire sticking out and a clip - other than that, pretty much the same! wink

Also, you'd be surprised at how much porn Google returns when you search for the phrase "cup and string".
