it's very easy to root the S2 and then uninstall all of the crap with Titanium Backup.
What did you use to root it? I've been meaning to do it for a while but I'm a complete novice at this sort of thing.

I used Chainfire's CF-Root 5.0 method form the XDA Developers forum.

There's a decent reference here too.

Make sure you use the correct kernel ;-)

Just changed my plan to a 'sim only' thing for a tenner a month (£5 discount for existing customers) which seems to cover my meagre requirements.

I'll stick with this until the button finally packs up, then I'll install an OS upgrade and if that goes smoothly use the screen button version until I get fed up with it.

If I can keep the phone going for another 6 months I'll have got two years use out of it which is pretty respectable.

iOS 5.01 (or 5.1?) is out now, to be honest, i'd just upgrade. As long as your phone is backed up beforehand then there's nothing to worry about. And I think if an upgrade broke it (and you couldn't restore) book in to an apple store and they'd sort it for free for you as they did for Mr A's back in July, and that phone was 18 months old

Yeah, I'll have to give it a go soon the buttons getting worse. Once I've sorted out these computers I'll give it a go!
