Pure awesome creamy goodness.

If you have a computer that can run it, or X-Box/PS3, then this is game of the year.

Well I've only played it on PC, but still. Get it.

It's supposed to unlock for PC on Friday in the UK. But someone figured out how to unlock it early, so we've been playing since last night already.

I'm so proud of my willpower. Mostly managed to wait until junior went to bed, and didn't pull an allnighter, playing.

Or maybe I'm just old now. Sad

From the trailers I've been sorely tempted to buy this. But then I remembered that you need an Origin account, which I couldn't be arsed to set up/maintain. Why don't they just sell it through Steam?!?

But then I got an email from EA saying that my EA Account (whatever that was) has been converted to an Origin account anyway, so as I've not got an Origin account, I might buy this.

EA publishes BF. EA wants to sell its games through its own store. They have a potential massive hit on their hands - of course they want to try and get as many people using Origin as possible.

Valve did the same basically with Half Life 2. That was a big driver in the success of Steam.

EA say it was to do with DLC over steam. They wanted more control over it than valve let them. Probably half true, half excuses.

That reminds me I must uninstall origin. I had it for the beta but then never got around to playing the PC version. I don't really do PC gaming other than indie and casual stuff these days. New games make my machine cry.

I thought Steam was created specifically for Half Life 2. It was an anti-cheat system at first, but then they expanded it to become an online store. Or that's how I remember it anyway.

I didn't want to bother with Origin because I want all my online games in one place, and Steam is that place. But seeing as I've now got an Origin account anyway, I might install the beta and see how it goes. It's all about the multiplayer, so I hear.

Open beta closed a while ago...

Origin isn't bad. Fairly unobtrusive. You only have to open it when you want to play BF3.

So how much is this bad boy then? I refuse to pay more than about £27 for a game these days.

That's a horrible looking game, I might have to buy it.

I'd probably run it on the PC as I've got a decent graphics card on this thing, but what is all this Origin and Steam nonsense that the young people are talking about? Can't I just buy a box, or do I have to set up yet another blooming web account that will inevitably stop working properly at some point?

Even if you buy a retail box, you will need an account and install Origin.

Now this really annoys me. Yes, if I want to play online then it's obviously a requirement, but if I want to buy the game (cheaper) from Amazon and play against the computer then I shouldn't have to tie myself up to yet another online bunch of numpties and give access to my PC to the whole world. I don't want 'social features', I want to hide in corners and shoot Americans when they walk past.

They can keep their silly game, I'll play with my moog instead.

My sentiments exactly! It just so happened that I "registered" (read: signed my life away) with EA when I bought one of the Command and Conquer games a while back, and EA just took it upon themselves to turn my EA account into an Origin account. So now that I've got one that I didn't ask for, I might just try out BF3.

I was quite happy in the pants when I saw videos of hacked servers with 128 players on a single map...

play against the computer

Not the game for you then. It's probably 7 hours of play in that case.

In the last version of the game, I played through the single-player part. It probably was about the same, 7-10 hours.

For the multiplayer, I've sunk in close to 300 hours...

You're assuming that I'm any good, and have more than 7 hours to take off in the next 12 months. I probably won't even make it out of the van, or helecopter, or whatever it is.

You start off inside a nuclear bomb, being dropped on a city, which you have to defuse using a special braille pad controller that you download along with the game.

Probably.

I've not played the SP campaign yet. Need to level up in MP quick... when everyone unlocks the good guns and cool gadgets, it's not so fun when you only have your peashooter to plink at the tanks with.

That's the thing I hate about playing online MP games - everyone's in such a hurry to get to max level and get all the cool toys, and then after a week they all get bored and bugger off.

I don't have that much time to put into a game like that, so by the time I actually get round to playing them the servers are either empty, or full of experienced players that kill me in seconds.

It doesn't really take that long to unlock most of the cool stuff.

A game like BF2 which is 6-7 years old now has only the pros who have memorised every spawn point though...

What I liked to do in Quake was pick up a BFG or rocket launcher, find a quiet spot to hide in and then take out losers as they walked past. We used to play a networked version at work lunchtimes and Colin in my office tried the trick a few times, but I'd have a look at his monitor to see where he was hiding, then sneak up and take his head off with a rocket to the back of the neck lol.

They design the multiplayer levels a bit better these days - you're unlikely to find a spot that you can camp out in that'll protect you from being killed as well.

They're clever buggers, these game designers!

BF has a killcam. When you die, it shows your attacker. You can generally work out where they are hiding, if you know the map a bit.

So how many bleedin' editions of this game are there then? And what do I get if I buy it from various places?

I'm already seeing talk of "limited edition" this, and "pre-order bonus" that. If I popped* into Tescos and bought one tonight, would I be missing out on anything?

You can currently probably only get the limited edition one. It comes with the Karkand expansion for free, when that is released.

As for other bonuses: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/06/battlefield-3-preorder-bonus-to-be-free-to-all-later-this-year.ars
