I just heard a trailer for a programme (a rehearsed bit of speech not an off the cuff comment) on Radio 2 where the presenter stated:

"There's fun to be had following kind of musical family trees..."

Great post Jon! I have been following the effort since you started it, and although I have understood its purpose this post does a really great job solidifying the full rationale.

There was a plane crash a few years ago and the news personnage on Radio 4 said "a warning light in the cockpit failed to go off". I had to e-mail in being Mr. Pedantic and ask that if the warning light failed to go off, then it was on and was doing its job so what was the problem. They never replied but at the next news report it was re-worded as the "warning light failed to illuminate". smile
