That's a very long 'but'.

Seriously - you're replaceable.  Your bosses know that otherwise they'd be bending over backwards to keep you with offers of a directorship, payrise and parties with free bars and latino hotties.  If you left, they'd phone up a recruitment agency and get a good-enough replacement within a couple of months.

I'm not trying to disparage what you do and are capable of - it's just that there are others out there at the moment with more experience than you who even be willing to relocate for a job.

So, lose this notion that you're irreplaceable, and focus on what you bring to the company, and use that as a negotiation tool :-)

I don't have a strange idea that I'm irreplaceable, just that my job is a bit more important to the company than a lot of people seem to think. It's a bit discouraging really.

Still, I think I managed to do what you suggested, in that I highlighted a lot of the positive things that I bring to the company, so hopefully that should help.

Some interesting stuff there, but for me its opposite.

I have a bitch of a commute - 2.5hours / 126 miles each way, from the midlands to south london. Why do I do it? Having been made redundant last year and being within a few days of having the bank take back the house I took the job that would keep us secure (and was the only one on offer). There are some perks, I am home based (and get to work from home a couple of days a month) which means the company pays for that commute mileage, and the salary means that my wife only has to work part time on her own flexible hours, which works for us. It does mean that I am out of the house at 5.30am and not back til gone 7 which is an absolute bum in terms of quality time with the family, but there is not the work around here that would allow me to work closer. Having said that, now that I have just about got a year there on my cv I am actively looking for something closer to home, but the pickings are pretty slim.

Given the choice a challenging / enjoyable job coupled with reasonable commute and average salary would suit me. Unfortunately, that choice doesn't come up very often.
