IS there a reason why the US (User system usage?) is always high, but not the system processor usage (US) when Im watching top?

Is it possible that www or other users cant use all the power there?

Apache is not a kernel process. %sy is usually low.

Unless you have deliberately done something to prevent it (man limits.conf) a process will use as much cpu as it needs.

Thanks Jason

Do you know anyone we could pay to take a look at our server setup and ensure its running as well as it can at all?

Just to say I think I finally solved my issue today.

I followed this tutorial http://www.prelovac.com/vladimir/wordpress-optimization-guide which knocked about 3 seconds off. Then I went through my plugins again, and found that UAM was responsible for a 4-5 second delay on loading times because of how it protected the content.

I installed an alternative and down to a max of 2 seconds per page.

Massive thanks to Jason, Sarah and Dave for their help
