Why have I got a gap here between the two parts of my image? (See the girl's hat to see what I mean)

I need to break it into two to prevent it being a 400kb file just for that bottom bit. Any ideas?

Why?

Only a guess to it being the issue with yours as I can't see the image in question, but inline images are aligned on the same baseline as text, with the space reserved for the text descender, leaving a noticeable gap beneath images in some circumstances.

I didn't think that applied if you contracted the space, making them the only contents of a <div> (no whitespace)?!
