I only got it because it wasn't that much more than the 8GB option (compared to the cost of the rest of the build...). I thought I might as well get it, rather than have to think about upgrading in a year or two.

I had 6 in my old computer, and never thought I'd need more than that. But having a decent DSLR camera: Lightroom + HD video editing are quite memory hungry.

Firefox 7 was supposed to fix some major memory usage problems. Doesn't seem any better to me...

Interesting comment over at El Reg...

Quote
Anyone with even an ounce of tech common sense in their head knows that to get the best performance, it's better to USE any unused memory rather than let it sit there in your system going to waste.

The key goal is to make a memory model that can achieve the best use of what memory you have available and be able to hand it back to the host OS at any given time, a scalable rendering engine, like what Opera have, that can be run on a featurephone, a smartphone, a tablet or a desktop, with however much memory is available.

Mozilla are playing marketing tricks on idiots, and those people that love to stuff their PC's with vast amounts of memory have just wasted their cash thanks to Mozilla's new choice to go for a small memory model over an adaptable memory model.

I'm one of those idiots with 16GB of RAM.

I was thinking of sticking another 8Gb in my machine this week too. I don't know if that guy is talking any sense though (well, apart from the "anyone with an ounce of tech common sense" bit). It seems silly to have unused RAM if you've got it, but then again I always thought it was better to have some available in case you need to open another application or do something RAM-intensive, like render video or whatever.

Should I just stick to 8Gb for now?

Thats why he is saying scalable - basically if xGB there, use it, but if another program comes along and needs y, then allow the program to easily switch to using less.

View > Toolbars > Addon Bar.

Ahhh, thanks, that's better! Stumbleupon bar back just where I like it!

I use Lastpass for password management Kim, and that has a good built-in form filler (and works with Firefox 7).

Thanks  smile Just installed - will see how I get on with it.

Another vote for Lastpass - use it on two PCs, phone and iPad. Very useful.

I have to admit I am rather impressed with it. I used Roboform for years but I actually think Lastpass is better.

Here we go again...

Up to Firefox 8 now - only one disabled extension this time (Adobe Acrobat - Create PDF) which can only be updated by editing it's install.rdf file in notepad.

Was this the release where they were going to take a tight reign on extensions.

Yep, add-ons installed by third party programs are now disabled by default.

They really don't need to keep releasing these faux major versions. Just call it 4.1, 4.2, etc.

And as of recently its working with Opera as well big grin both xmarks and lastpass are great, have been wanting to move over to opera for a while but their old incompatibility was the only thing that kept me on firefox.

EDIT: jumped the gun a bit, still no xmarks for opera Sad
