Wordpress image map

I need to create a map which highlights locations when their names are hovered over from a list below for a WP site.

At the moment the only ways I can think of doing this are via an actual image map itself, or by creating a horrible Flash thing - both of which will be a pain to update. I know you can place points on a Google map but I'm not sure if you can connect this to a list of place names below. I'm going to check out a few plugins later to see if the functionality covers this but if anyone has any suggestions while I'm at the dentist this morning then I'd be happy to hear them.
