ab is nice and simple, not entirely realistic requesting the same URL as quickly as it can, but it is consistent. A room full of kids would likely be an even bigger, but more staggered, load as they will also be loading images, scripts, etc and not all be clicking things at the same time.

Give the 'WP Super Cache' plugin a try, it seems to do a reasonable job for the /archives/1 page (260 vs 23 requests per second). Although using a cache to counter slow code is bad form IMHO.

That's cut like for like CPU % to 30%. just not sure it's any good for when people are logged in.

That's exactly what I've been telling our IT people who seem to think that a cache is a solution to poo code - until I update a website and they have to go and clear it in three or four places, they grumble a bit then...
