All the last edits are because I forgot to add 'ory.' to the end. Seriously? Is that some form of OCD? Short answer - yes. ORY. All you have to do is look at his signature to realise this, its the first thing he mentioned when I met him as well

Glad to hear its working. Told you it would make a difference Cheers. Certainly does. If you'd done the same thing on your old drive would it have made the same difference? /not causing trouble

Old machine was happy as Larry, which is why I didn't notice the difference. ory.

I've gotten out of touch with new hardware over the last couple of years (got enough problems with old Win2K machines at work!), and I'm quite amazed how quickly SSDs have progressed.
I've not long switched to win7, so I'm now very tempted to re-install onto an SSD...

Great post Jon! I have been following the effort since you started it, and although I have understood its purpose this post does a really great job solidifying the full rationale.

After all the fuss, I'm not sure I'd recommend it. If you have a fairly small data footprint, ie. don't create large files and don't have to rely on an exterior HDD all day, it's worth it for the extra speed. Otherwise I'd stick with a standard drive. As my Drobo can be temperamental at the best of times, it's becoming a royal PITA to get stuff done. Although, obviously if you've got the cash to buy a larger SSD, it won't be such an issue. ory.

WOOOOOOOOOOSH
Got my new computer. It's pretty hard to say how much the SSD affects (as it's a fast as heck computer anyway), but I'm loving it nevertheless.
I never realised before that there wasn't supposed to be a delay when UAC pops up when you're trying to do something adminny...
Got a SATA III Intel 120GB.
I have 2 X 1TB SATA III drives in the machine for regular files.

Sounds good. For some reason, a fast computer helps with my productivity in more than just a "look how quick it runs" kind of way. This laptop I'm using at work is pretty slow but bearable, but having a faster machine just puts me in a better frame of mind I think. My machine at home is lightening quick, and I'm hoping it stays that way for some time. I actually like using it.

Yeah, there have been problems. That's why I'll be storing important stuff over my two traditional drives. I could clone my OS/boot drive onto one of the drives, but I don't think I can be bothered.

I need to buy a new PC. Just can't be bothered. Ironic as I'm supplying/setting up so many.

Yeah, this took ages. First time I didn't buy an OEM.
I picked out the parts (from a 'system builder' form) on the website of a local reputable firm, and they put it all together for me. Took ages picking the parts I wanted though. And just as I had my ideal setup, one crucial part would go out of stock.
I also got greedy... the prices of individual components fluctuate daily, and it seemed the price was dropping a few quid a day for the build I wanted. So I waited a little. Then two crucial components sold out, and I couldn't be bothered to wait so long, so had to replace them with more expensive parts (after tons of review reading, naturally).

BTW, Dom, I put my EA Origin and Steam installations on one of my 1TB drives just in case. It just means it will be a little slower at starting up and loading maps.
I'm not hurting for space - 120GB drive, maybe half full now - but I haven't looked into shrinking my installation or anything. Everything just at stock.

Sounds good. I think I've used about 100Gb since I re-installed, and that's with Win 7 Ultimate, Crysis 2, Deus Ex HR, Star Trek Online, and two of the Command and Conquer games. And Adobe stuff.
I've not used as much space as I thought I would actually.

Hit my first snag. Suddenly almost completely ran out of disk space. Tracked the hog down to my app data folder. Every time I sync my iPod or iPad, it creates a backup. They each have around 25GB of data... looks like there are solutions for changing where iTunes saves those. Or then I'll try to skip backing up. EDIT: This worked - back to having 50% left.

So are they as lightening quick as people say they are?

After BIOS has loaded, I'm at my Windows desktop in a jiffy. I should time it. I'd guess 10+ seconds.
But this computer is bloody fast anyway, so hard for me to say how much of that is the SSD.

You can't beat a nippy PC. I love mine, I just hope it stays this way.
