I realised over the weekend, before my non-existent premium delivery bedroom furniture arrived, that the carpets are a bit filthy from all the work we've been doing lately.

Seeing as at least one room will be finished by the end of tomorrow, I figured I should get to work cleaning up the carpets, as they're not too shabby at all. They just need a good clean.

We were going to get professional cleaners in, but given the abominable time-keeping and unable-to-stick-to-a-schedule-ness currently exhibited by the landlords, it'd be impossible to make sure that the rooms were actually ready for a good clean on any given day, so I decided to give it a go myself.

So... anyone got any tips for giving carpets a thorough clean? I'm talking shampoo, scrubbing brush, the whole shebang. We've got a nice Dyson to try and keep things nice one it's been cleaned, but there are many and various "miscellaneous stains" left over by the previous tenants that could do with removing. It's not quite cause for getting the haz-mat suits out, but it needs more than just a good hoover.

Any thoughts? I was thinking that Cillit Bang probably do some reasonable cleaning products. Lord knows, Barry Scot shouts loud enough.

For cleaning carpets I think 1001 is your best bet for stains, however to be honest I would suggest you find out if anyone you know has a carpet cleaner (a VAX for example) as it'll make your life much easier.

With three dogs our carpets can get a bit manky so every so often we hire a carpet cleaner from Morrisons or Homebase and that does a great job. Nice and fast too. And more importantly, it's an easy way to clean them!

Ooo I didn't realise you could hire things like that. Might be worth a look in Homebase as we've visited them fairly often recently. Ta!

We always hire a machine when we move to a new place, it's frightening the amount of muck they'll pick up.
