Post your favourite apps!

I must say, I'm a little disappointed that quite a few of the apps I have for my iPod Touch either are not universal (and 2x mode does not do much for me), or are a separate app that needs to be rebought.

With apologies in advance to FC.

Yeah, I've spent a small fortune on iPhone apps and it's a bit disappointing they can't be transferred or upgraded but there you go. Most of the iPad stuff I'll be buying though is completely new.

Disappointed, but not unexpected I hope. This is Apple, after all. I mean, you've just paid £400 for an iPhone that they've made 3x as big and then removed the phone part. Don't think you'll be able to use the same apps on it that you do on your iPhone!

If it's half as good as the iPhone then I'll be impressed.

I've bought one for music making apps and arty stuff. If I totted up the music software and hardware equivalent prices for the £60 or so quid I'll be spending on apps then it would probably come out at well over three grand - probably a lot more. Then there's the art stuff - I've no idea how much it'd cost for a touch screen drawing set up via PC but it's probably more than the few quid I'll be spending on digital and vector art apps. It'll save me £100 a year just on nibs for my flipping Wacom.

The other reason I bought one is that I usually spend a couple of hours with the laptop in the evenings with the telly on in the background. General stuff - browsing, building up Twitter followers, updating my own sites, spamming blogs for backlink gold, annoying people on Facebook etc. Recently though, with the increasingly erratic and crap performance from my HP (which includes about a 15 minute wait for start up and wifi connection by which time the batteries run down) I've found myself using my phone instead. It's just so much easier, no wires and no burnt lap. It's fiddly though, and posting to this forum is a nightmare on it, but all that'll be solved with the iPad.

When she can prise it from my sweaty grasp Mrs FC is going to be using for general work/office and email stuff as she absolutely hates her Dell laptop.

The total cost of things we'd have to buy to do all the things the iPad can do is probably around half a million quid, so we're saving hundreds of thousands of pounds by buying one.

I just wish Mrs FC hadn't insisted on buying a girly white one.

Haven't got it yet, but I'll let you know after the weekend smile

Art-wise I'll definitely be buying SketchBook Pro. Not sure about vectors, there's loads of contenders: iDesign, Inkpad, iDraw etc. All fairly basic but useful for sketching quick logo ideas.

Music-wise there's a bigger list, so far: Korg iMS-20, Rebirth, KORG iELECTRIBE, touchAble - dedicated multitouch controller for Ableton Live or TouchOSC, Morphwiz, Yonac miniSynth Pro, Bleep!box, Apple GarageBand, Aura Flux, reactable and loads of other goodies I haven't discovered yet. I'd love KONKREET PERFORMER but it works in conjunction with Macs only.

I'll probably get Garage Band just because it's so well known, and only a fiver.

Yeah, I find the white a bit distracting but I'll probably get used to it. When iPad 3 comes out I'll get a black one and she can keep this one in her handbag.

That'll be down to the app creators and not Apple.

Out of the iphone apps I have 31 will work on ipads too, because they've been made to.

I thought things were supposed to "just work" with Apple products? Why would they not work on an iPad if they work on an iPhone?

There are differences between them. And the UI can be reworked to take advantage of the more screen real estate.

How are you getting on with yours? Impressed - or a bit disappointed?

I'm looking forward to getting my special white one on Friday, unless PC World grab the stock first, but I'm slightly miffed to see two of my apps are no longer at their 'special' price so they're going to cost me an extra £15. Then again the hardware versions would cost £1900 and nearest PC software plugin equivalents £400 so I shouldn't complain really.

I've not really had the time to properly get to grips with it. But it was a lot of fun to browse in bed last night, and test watching some HD 720p video on it. Lovely.

And some of the kiddy apps for Steve Jr. are actually universal, so he loved playing with it (under my supervision of course).

How does it work when you connect it to iTunes on your PC - can you copy across files and apps from your iPhone?

I kind of messed up, and started from afresh. It wasn't clear from the message when I first connected. It seems you can use a backup of your iPhone/iPod on your iPad.

So before connecting the iPad, connect and sync your iPhone. Then right click on the iPhone and create a backup, so you have a fresh one. Then when you connect your iPad, set it up using the backup, rather than as fresh.

Well, there were only some annoyances, like having to do mail/network settings, bookmarks, etc. Maybe it was better to get a 'fresh' install though.

I've got another 12 months or so on my phone contract. I don't think I'll be getting an iPhone unless the iPhone 5 is something amazing, but I'll defo be getting a phone with decent specs. This Wildfire is OK, but it does struggle at times, with it's rather basic hardware. I should have spent more green and got a Desire.

I didn't mean that. A phone almost sounds useful. This is pure fluff.

Pure, tax deductible fluff.

Thanks for the iTunes tip, I'll bear that in mind while I'm shouting at the screen and punching the keyboard.

Think I'll have to buy another dock.

I bought a dock which is plugged into a wall socket, and it's where I keep my iPad (in the bedroom), so I put it in the dock when I've finished with it in bed (and it's where I escape to for a fiddle in peace - no sniggering at the back). Incidentally, I have it on a fairly high book shelf (toddle proofing) - so lucky I had a USB extender as I've noticed the Apple cables get shorter and shorter.

It can be a little fiddly connecting a normal cable for syncing with my computer though. So much easier to connect by popping it into the dock, so I guess I'll buy one for the computer. As a bonus, my iPod Touch can use the same dock. But not many other models can.
