Mother of Marge has asked me to post a query about new TVs.  She wants to get a new HD ready TV for use with Virgin+, but is not sure if LCD or LED is best.  And what about HDI cables; are they necessary?  Any good brands/any pants brands to avoid?

LCD will be fine, but LED will be better. hdmi cables are essential, will take image and sound from v box t tv, the v box might come with the cable though? the hdmi cable is the only way to get a hd picture, as scart won't.

Brands - panasonic and samsung are my recommendations.

Sanding all the way for me. The LE range is very good and I've bought two recently for relatives.

Virgin supply the HDMI cable.  I wouldn't buy any thing electrical for the kitchen except Bosch.  And electrical elsewhere is Philips.

I like Bosch. No idea what their TV's are like but their lawnmowers and drills are brilliant.

I bought an LG 42" LED TV a while back, and although it's still in the box, I did take it out and turn it on to see how it all looked, and I was very impressed.

LCD technology is a little older, so you can find some great bargains out there, even for the larger screen sizes. I'm guessing Mother of Marge isn't too fussed about the absolute latest super-duper technology, as long as it works well, looks nice, and isn't too expensive. LCD would be your best bet there.

LED is a newer technology, and as such is a little bit more expensive, but you'll get a much brighter picture and higher contrast ratio. I don't suppose many people would notice the difference between an LCD and an LED TV unless they watched a lot of HD films or played HD games (which I do) so you're probably fine finding a nice LCD TV. I can't really recommend brands as I've not had many TVs myself, but I'd imagine that the technology is far enough advanced that any commonly-recognizable brand will be perfectly fine. Which TV you buy will come down to other things such as price, screen size, and how many devices you'll be connecting to it (and hence, how many connections on the back you'll need.)

Just FYI, I bought this TV from Dixons, although the last time I checked it was £399. (Not sure they still do it though.)

I've got a Sony and an LG. The Sony is better than the LG. You don't need to spend more than a tenner on a HDMI cable.

WHS - the expensive HDMI cables are a complete waste of money. No discernible difference in quality of picture over the cheaper versions. £10 is about right (cheaper ones will probably be prone to falling to bits)

Can you even get that many Plasma TVs these days?

LCDs on the 'typical' sizes found in homes are much better, LED are much brighter - but I have a 40" Samsung we brought a year and a half ago on the spur of the moment and it uses Sky HD and its picture is amazing. On standard definition it is bloody good as well, and I haven't brought any special cables.

I do recommend a HD source though for these TVs, thats what they are built for, so buying one and using SD is daft.

I may be wrong, but I remember reading even SD coming from a HD box through HDMI will be better quality then a standard SD source through scart or similar?

Freesat HD, Sky HD and Virgin HD are all affordable these days, Iam tempted to go to Freeview HD when my Sky HD pack expires soon.

Also, a lot of TVs will have Freeview or Freesat built in, but it most likely won't be HD, just so you know. I don't know why they don't tend to build HD Freeview/Freesat into TVs, but that's how it is. Just a way to get more money off of you I suppose.

I almost bought an LG LCD tv, but they were just a bit too expensive for me.

There were some good clearance deals on at Richer Sounds, but whilst tempted, I'd have to buy a stand and a remote control to replace the ones the shop lost!

Samsung and the Sony Bravia TVs also seem to be highly rated on a number of websites, and I chose the Samsung in the end - very happy with it, apart from occassional changes in sound level (eg it jumps up / down a few levels). If I was bothered, I'd hook it up to a proper stereo system.

I have a Panasonic Viera plasma and a samsung lcd, the plasma beats the LCD hands down on viewing experience (and gaming), the internet is better on the samsung.

If you want a really big one, panasonic do a 152 inch 3d plasma, but you need a big living room for it - and some glasses...

I find blu rays look video-ey on the samsung, filmic on the panny, and with the ps3 there is quite a lot of lag on the samsung whereas the panasonic is instant in response - has your old mans got neo-pdp or whatever it is?

If HD material looks like that, switch off the motion enhancer or whatever. My Sony has a 'Theatre mode' button on the remote which fixes that.

an ALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  banana banana banana banana banana banana

Its amazing how manufacturers find new exciting ways to pedal the old crap, and in doing so actually reduce the quality of the crap you're viewing/listening to.

Music for example. (Olde Yawners Rant of The Day is about to begin)

What was wrong with vinyl records?

Well ok, they'd warp, scratch easily and take up a good corner of your living space. But apart from that? In terms of sound, a vinyl record through a decent hifi system is unbeatable. Proper analogue sound, the full sound. Not some digital approximation guff, which leads me onto......

CDs.

We didn't realise it, but we all had to change our music collection across to CDs. Shiny discs in their tiny sleeves with writing so bloody small you need a microscope to read. No more wonderful huge gatefold album covers. Kerr-chinggg for the record companies. No need to come up with new talent or creativity with new music. No, just change the bloody format for the nice "clean" sound of CDs. Oh, and a CD will last you a lifetime. My arse.

But the biggest pisstake of all time has to be:

MP3s

A digital approximation of a digital approximation of the bloody sound. The musical equivalent of a jpeg at 10% quality. Whoa, we can get 5 million songs on our mp3 player. Yes, because its complete tinny shite played through crappy plastic earphones, thats why.

swear swear swear

And why can't I buy a decent gramophone on Ebay these days?

Absolutely! Now I might listen to what Steve accurately describes as "a load of pots and pans banging together", but up until recently, the DJs that played it still used vinyl, but lately it's all turned to MP3s and they've just stopped making vinyl records. You can't beat the sound quality of a vinyl record on some lovely speakers.

CDs are OK, and top-quality MP3s aren't much worse, but they just don't have that "warm" sound that vinyls have.

I doubt it. I thought Plasmas were a thing of the past apart from the biggest screens - that said I havent looked since we got ours!
