The Camel is British, it's an Albatros D-Va (German) have a look in the latest issue of Airfix mag (out next week) for the rest of the drawings and more geeky details on it. As for how they are done, it's good old colouring in, lots of photos, some blueprints and more photos. Create the basic outline, panel lines and extras in Illustrator, import as shape layers into photoshop to line everything up. A load of layer groups for the different bits, vector masks. Do the colour bit and then add highlights, shading, weathering, rivets and panel lines on top. Total time 1-2 days depending on how much notice the mag editors give me

Great post Jon! I have been following the effort since you started it, and although I have understood its purpose this post does a really great job solidifying the full rationale.

Ditto. (Assuming the Victor is the top one.)
If there's one thing (there are many) that I'd love to be able to do, it's draw. Be it freehand or on a PC.

Glad you all like them, just for you lot here's another one, only got the job yesterday morning and had 24 hours to turn it round. And before you ask, no it's not a Spitfire That's nice, I like the colouring on the tail - very natural looking and convincing. Hurricane should like this one.

It looked a lot like a sopwith to me - you just got the markings wrong!* Excellent work though Inky - nice one * Note: I have no interest in planes whatsoever - I spotted it had two sticky out bits (wings I think they may be called?) and thought - that reminds me of a biplane called a Sopwith Camel. Regardless, the primary point was one of appreciation of your excellent work.

thats not far off seeing a big old ship with a sail and proclaiming it the Cutty Sark Mr H-S I just assumed your vast knowledge was all encompassing, thats all. I admit being quite wrong on this. *edit* - just for Sam: inferior artwork to mr teh Inky naturally

like you said old chum, you have "no interest in planes whatsoever" Hang on Sam, weren't you considering a career in the RAF once upon a time?

(wipes tear from eye) A true thing of beauty. Can`t believe we're scrapping Harriers when there's nothing else to match them in the world.

like you said old chum, you have "no interest in planes whatsoever" Hang on Sam, weren't you considering a career in the RAF once upon a time? Navy - as a pilot, but it's also worth pointing out that I was a 16 year old thinking it would be nice to be funded through uni on a pretty good wage. I can't fully remember the details of it now - but IIRC I passed the assessment centre, although I didn't do at all well in the "recognising ships and planes" test. Anyway, I thought better of it before signing on - think it was the right decision in retrospect My motivations were selfishly about the cash more than actually having too much of an interest in doing the work. Actually, come to think of it - that's probably still true
