I am looking at getting myself a new Camcorder, one that records directly to the built in HD. Can anyone give me any pointers on what to avoid if any as this is a whole new ball game to me.

Avoid one with HDD in it.

When its full and you're on holiday its far easier to swap the tape. And tape still beats DVD in quality.

I always thought the tapes were crap. I have spent hours of time trying to get footage of my children onto a disc for parents to watch. I tried so hard that the tape broke and now no longer have certain footage.

I thought HDD was the way to go, surely tape cant be better than HDD, can it ?

IMO Tape is the way, mostly for the reasons stated by Shirker.

I was asked the very same question the other day and I suggested Tape and not HDD, they bought HDD. Time will tell whether or not they'll regret not taking my advice.

Each to their own tho.

What about DVD ones? The quality is supposed to be slightly worse. Is it that noticeable?
Having to stream the tape down onto my machine and hoping the PC keeps up would probably offset and advantage.

I've never had a problem with that.

It's my special curse. Anything that revolves around having to transfer data quickly and seamlessly always goes funny on my computers no matter how new or old.

I always have to burn CDs way below the writers speed else I get coasters. That's on 3 separate machines that have had about 7 different writers over the years.

I have an old camcorder and it always got a bit twitchy when getting the movie off the camcorder. Mind you that was a good old analogue tape.

This is the correct Amateur porno editor answer.
