If your graphics card isn't ancient, like windows 95 era,  you should be fine with regard to resolution.

Check what outputs you have, dvi, hdmi, display port, whatever, and get a monitor with a matching input.

Have a look in device manager to see what card it is, then do a search to see what resolution it supports

Right click desktop > properties
Select the 'settings' tab
Click 'advanced'
Select the 'adapter' tab
Click 'list all modes'

Great post Jon! I have been following the effort since you started it, and although I have understood its purpose this post does a really great job solidifying the full rationale.

...the guy at John Lewis suggested it...

That's almost as bad as taking advice from people in PC World.

But yeah, any graphics card made in the last few years will be able to support nice, high resolutions. To be honest, unless you've got a massive screen, you're unlikely to even use resolutions that some graphics cards can do. It's more important that you check what connections your graphics card has, and buy a monitor that uses them (or at least, buy an adaptor). DVI (usually a white connector) is the most common at the moment, with VGA (a blue connector) being the older, analogue connection. Fancy schamncy cards also have HDMI outputs as well, but you won't need to worry about that unless you're playing blurays on your PC.

cheers .... it's a VGA connection which the screen I;m looking at has ... tried the right click etc ... gives a list, the largest res being 1280

yet according to http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_9400gt_us.html

Maximum Digital Resolution 2560x1600
Maximum VGA Resolution 2048x1536

the screen I was looking at has a res of 1600 (or was it 1900) x dry? so according to the above, that should do it .... or have I misunderstood it ... PC was bought in 2005 btw

See if 'Hide modes this monitor can't display' is checked, as then it will only show you what the monitor can do rather than what the card can do
