I'm looking for some cheap/free software recommendations that will run on Windows 7. I used to use (slightly rubbish) Premiere Elements but it refuses to run on 7 and the new Windows Movie Maker is horrific, about a thousand times worse than the XP version.

It's just for mucking about, making silly movies for my even sillier music. Elements was good as it had an option to layer video tracks, but a standard editor would be fine as long as I can add a separate music track.

It's at times like this that I miss the Mac...

Did you try 'compatibility mode'? Does that exist on windows 7?

Was that a haiku?

I'm not sure, I'm new to 7 so there could be all sorts of special things hidden from my eyes.

It depends on what version of Windows 7 you've got as to whether you can run it in compatibility mode I think. Windows 7 Ultimate has an XP Mode, but I think it's only the Ultimate (and Enterprise) versions that do.

I think in Vista, all versions support it.

Thanks Ben, I'll have a look.

I bought Vegas for my niece a few birthdays ago. She loves it. Seems intuitive and easy to use.

Great post Jon! I have been following the effort since you started it, and although I have understood its purpose this post does a really great job solidifying the full rationale.

The Sony software looks really good, and they bundle Soundforge in there too.

Which version would you recommend? There seems to be a few options available: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_sq_top?ie=UTF8&keywords=sony%20vegas&index=blended&pf_rd_p=103612307&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000FTRZNG&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=15WN6B4H1QH14RWXPHYS

This seems the most up to date/best option: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Movie-Studio-Platinum-Suite/dp/B003L51CZ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299852189&sr=8-1

I'd go for the "Sony Movie Studio HD 10 Platinum Suite" one - I think you get some extra filters, some music and SFX as well.

Why did you get rid of that Mac again? Something with the mouse or something wasn't it?

Mouse acceleration. Saying that though they seemed to have added something similar to Windows 7, though at least on this you can switch it off.

If I was using a computer just for personal stuff then I'd buy a Mac. Their music and video software is superb and very cheap, and the hardware provides incredible audio quality and zero latency.

Everything else though is rubbish, including the price.

I've ordered a copy of the Sony Movie Studio HD 10 Platinum Suite from Amazon. It was a fiver less than when I last looked, so now only £37 (instead of 80/90 quid everywhere else), and considering Soundforge is bundled with it which costs £25 on it's own it seemed silly not to get a copy.

Looks like a very good bit of software, thanks again for the recommendations.

I used the Sony Vegas trial for a while, and it was OK.

Tried the Adobe Premiere Elements trial, and though the basic interface was a bit 'My First Editor', I preferred it, so bought that.

I guess if you don't need lots of features then it's probably more straightforward. I like messing about though.

Yeah, you can actually go 'under-the-hood' a little bit, but for getting the basics set up quickly before any tweaking, the 'hold-your-hand' mode is fairly decent.
