I am trying to setup / upload etc... some files on an FTP site.

The host has given me a set of FTP login details which get me into the main root directory but i have no write or Mkdir privileges to the server,

I just get all the time:

> 550 Create directory operation failed.
> ERROR:> Requested action not taken (e.g., file or directory not found, no
> access).
> ERROR:> Can't create following directory: "/var/www/cgi-bin/Test".

He has also given me a root password and says i need to "su" once you've logged in.

How the hell do i do that? and why the hell the host has to make things difficult and not just give an f'ing FTP account that works [RANT]  crybaby

I was using CuteFTP and this does have a FTP command function but it just seems to reject all commands.

Anyone know how i can do this and or another FTP client that would be better?

Thanks in advance

Andy.

Usually he will give you access to a specific directory. The only way you'll be able to create directories is with the root or owners password.

Are you logging into the correct directory?

Hi Chris,

Yes, i know that that's usually the case.

But with this server i have a whole server back to root level "/".

I have then gone into /var/www/html/ or /var/www/cgi-bin etc... but just have no write access.

All he says is:

IP: **.**.**.**
Username: demo
Password: ****
The root password (via su) is *****

so when i initally login as demo it looks fine, b ut cannot write to the server so i contacted him again and he just says

"you need to su once you've logged in."

The password for root access is *****

So i have no idea?

andy.

[obivously i have blanked the username and passwords]

I didn't think you could su via FTP - that's a shell command. You normally use that when you're going in through SSH.

Do you have telnet access? You can change to root then - pretty sure that you can't su while in an ftp session

Worth trying though. Just type "su -" while logged in and enter the password (if it lets you)

I take it direct root ftp access it blocked?

I am not sure if i have telnet access.

I have tried logging in via FTP and SSH. FTP let me in but cannot write to disk and SSH rejects the login.

I have also tried using root as the username and the the entering the root password and it just get rejected.

I will go back to him and ask him for either the full root access or a basic FTP account login.

Why do people make things so flipping complicated  no
