Order entry

Hi all - more of the same application I was askng about before...
Using an ASP.Net page and connecting to SQL Server.
I have a "new order" form which is filled out and items added to the order all on the same page. Now I seem to remember that I used to have to use a generated random order ID for the order items when they were inserted to that I could grab them and update their orderID with the ID of the inserted order on completion of the entry. Is there a better and more secure way of doing this?
Steve.
