Could anyone recommend a video camera sub £200? We don't want to go overboard on the spending front, but need one before Xmas for the kids' nativities at Playgroup and Nursery.... Ta

Went to Comet today to have a look at what was on display. Couldn't find any model number of product specifications. But on the final occasion, of many, I was approached by an assistant I asked whather they had any camcorders with low light facility."Oh yes" was the reply... assistant then guided me to the digital cameras, and said he didn't know the exact specs... I wanted a camcorder, I said. "Oh Sorry" he replied, and guided me back to where we were a few moments ago. "I don't know the specs really on these" he said. "I can't see anything obvious about low light on these" I said. He then lifted one up, "We have to switch them on and look in the set up" "What?" was my exclamation. He then said "I'll go check on the computer". We waited, and waited, and as I was about to leave, he appeared. "I've checked all the top of the ranges, and nothing has anything for low light level". "Aye right" was my reply, and left. What a f*ckin waste of time.

To be honest, I doubt very much if you'll find anything sub 200 that will be good in low light - even sub £600 is not going to be that great.

The reason? It's pretty easy and cheap to make sensors that look ok with lots of light, and it's easy and cheap to make lenses that don't have a very wide aperture. To compensate for this, the camera - when faced with low light  - will increase the sensitivity of the sensor, but by doing this it increases noise, so you end up with murky horrible video with ghosting etc. as it can't unload the charge fast enough to get on to the next frame.

The answer? If you really want good low light capability then you are looking at a DSLR or shelling out several thousand for a broadcast standard camera.

Another option is to convert it to black and white and make out like it's an art film.

Plus - why go to a washing machine shop for a video camera?

I've been impressed by the video quality from my little Canon Ixus still/video camera, excellent sound and picture quality, and you can even grab good quality stills from the video. I paid about £180 a year ago, but I think you can pick one up for a hundred now, plus they fit in your pocket so always handy for capturing adhoc stuff. I've got a higher quality dedicated video camera (Panasonic) but it's so much easier to take the Canon out that I never use it.

We've just bought a Flip HD jobby. Karl borrowed one from work to test and it was fairly good. Was around £100 IIRC.

I must say that it records in AVCHD, and as a result (?) I can't burn as DVD so now looking for converters online... well I think this is right anyway. AVCHD is connected to Blu-Ray format...? Bummer... need to get a Blu-Ray player now.... lol

I've got Handbreak, but will also follow your suggestion Mike, cheers. I thought it was all going to be so easy. How naive I am... they, JVC, do suggest on their website to buy a piece of software from them for £12, but it is a bit of a cheek I thought.... especially when folk have their own burnign software too.
