Help!

I've been given an old laptop which has Fedora 10 installed on it (and has an account on it I can't access as it's password protected) and I just want to wipe it and install XP over it. I put my XP install disk in and boot the PC up and I get to the stage where it says "Windows is examining your hardware..." but then the screen goes black and nothing happens.

I've never used Fedora before and know nothing about it at all. In googling I'm found that this is a common issue and something to do with Windows not recognising some partition or other  unsure unsure with the advise given being to boot from the Fedora disk and do some stuff I don't understand which I think deletes the partition. I've downloaded Fedora 14 and made a bootable DVD but when it boots up I don't know what to do to get to a command prompt or even what to enter at a command prompt if I could get there.

Any ideas?

Command prompt will probably be in a menu somewhere as terminal. There is likely to be a gui utility of some description to do this but I can't tell you how to use that in so few words.

When you find a command prompt
Code:
sudo fdisk /dev/sda
Then
Code:
d
If it asks for a number start with 1 and repeat with the next number in the range it suggests until it stops asking. Then type
Code:
w
(Hitting return where appropriate).

Done. Reboot. Install Windows.
