I am looking for recommendations for seo tools and services. Ideally free but I'll pay if it's worth it.

My main site was ranked very well for years but has slipped a little recently.

My recommendation would be to add some new content and promote the site, rather than messing about with keyword tweaking tools, and ensure your layout's cleanly and semantically coded.

But you probably don't want to hear that.

Oh Right, Thanks Mr A.

Well, I already know that my code should be clean and semantic (I'm not sure how net-curtains knew the site in question wasn't clean and semantic without the URL but there you go) so that considered and the fact that wasn't actually what I asked I'll make him feel right at home here and I'll ignore him too big grin

He probably just guessed about what the site was like from his .net experience wink

Free tools I know of (bit out of touch as don't keep up with SEO these days, too busy reading baby books!)

Google Webmaster Central
SEO Book site has a firefox extension that can tell you your rankings etc.
Web CEO gives a bit of info
Plus I think there were a few freebie sites linked to from that my seo tools site too.

Apologies if you realised all of these already!

I've not been on .net for over 10 years so I'm not in touch with who and what goes on over there.

Sorry if I sounded grumpy, I'm just used to clients asking for a quick fix SEO 'tool' that will magically make their site appear at 'the top of Google', yet never bother to update their website with content, or write more than a paragraph in the first place.

I'm sure your code is lovely, but if your site is slipping then it's probably because you're not keeping it updated, otherwise it wouldn't be slipping.

Personal experience has shown me that keyword twiddling and even link building is not as effective as keeping your site up to date with good quality content and by marketing your website on and offline.

With respect, I am not a client who knows bugger all, in fact I'm nobody's client. I do have a little expirience in building and running an ecommerce site, All I needed was a few tools to help check things like keyword density etc.

The SEO book tools are good - particularly the Firefox extension for easy rank monitoring. And I also swear by the SEOMoz ranking factors list.

But like net-curtains says, the best thing to do is to have plenty of fresh content that other people want, and do, link to.

Don't even bother... a pregnant woman's memory isn't worth tuppence..... you'll forget it all in an instant. And they usually have a lot of nonsense anyway. You'll be doing stuff, then remember the books said to do it a different way....  laugh
I'm sure MrA will take over if you ask him nicely.... he always has the solution for me...  biggrin

Oh it is so nice to see an SEO discussion, it gets everyone so communicative expressive, if not a bit exasperated... lol

even if my memory reduces, it's still a bit like a good sponge. I'm a walking bible on a fair bit already. Theory has never been a problem for me. Practise may be different but for now I'd rather at least give myself an idea of what to expect and possibly how to help myself. I've already had someone else comment saying 'when it's there you get on with it', but it's easy for people to say that when they've done it. I've also had my brother (who lent me most the books) say they wish they'd read them before my nephew arrived as they had a month or two of hard work until they realised what the HV was saying wasn't helpful. Instincts may take over, but seeing as I've never even changed a nappy (no need to as no one had a baby close (in location) to me) I'd rather have an inkling of what to expect wink

Mr A. Has the vast language of PHP to learn so he can run the company single handedly Tongue

Just over 3 months to go. 99 days to go (if it's on time!).

Jeep's little 'un must be due soon as I'm sure they were September/October time?
