I'm trying to add a macbook to our network so the user can access his email account i set up yesterday.
Unfortunately his macbook can't see our exchange servers at all when i try to ping them, the outlook web access just produces a DNS error and imail says "server is not responding".
so far i've:
enabled active directory on the mac (although the other macs in the office don't have this enabled)
tried adding it to the domain through the mac login options under system preferences -> account
checked that the Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service is running on the server
i'm running out of ideas this morning, can anyone help?
the other macs in the office are all running entourage or have microsoft office installed on them (not necessarily with entourage set up), and through my (so far fruitless) googling it seems that exchange uses the proprietary MAPI protocol rather than anything the mac supports. perhaps office installs this support along with itself..?
any thoughts guys? maybe i should download a trial of office and see if that helps..?
EDIT:
installing office didn't necessarily help, except entourage threw up an error & suggested going to network settings under system preferences and checking the DNS. i added our DNS server and domain settings manually, which half solved the problem (entourage would get as far as verifying the settings then hanging) and the web access just refused to show anything (not even DNS error this time). i went back and checked the DHCP settings to see they'd been overridden, so whacked them back to automatic and everything's all groovy
