Acer Aspire 5100.

On booting it flips through this message
Quote
For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM

If I take the hard drive out and put it back in then it works. For a time.

When it errors a live linux doesn't see the hd. So something dodgy but dodgy hd or dodgy connector?

Anything else I should be looking at?

Ta.

Sounds like the HDD to me (the  'error' is it trying to boot from the network after its failed to boot from a HDD/CD - check the boot order and disable it to be sure (in the bios)), if you take it out, check what the mfr is and visit their site, most offer bootable ISOs to download which will check and in somecase fix HDD errors...
