Anybody know of a software solution for XP that will encode and burn video DVDs?

Its for my sister so freeware/open-source is the preferred option, I'm installing a DVD-burner drive to her PC tonight but I doubt she'll know that its not as simple as just having a drive.  Would be great if there is a free app that has an uber-foolproof interface... she'll need it big grin

I normally use Nero or Windows DVD Maker but the latter is for Vista/7 only

I looked at DeepBurner but the free edition doesn't seem to do DVD video encoding

any suggestions?

In what way do you need to encode the video? What's the source?

Great post Jon! I have been following the effort since you started it, and although I have understood its purpose this post does a really great job solidifying the full rationale.

from MPEG, AVI etc stored on her hard-drive to DVD video (i.e. can be played in a normal living-room DVD player)

Ive found it easier to buy a cheap dvd player from asda/tesco with xvid or vidx support then you just need to burn the mpeg and avi files to disk.

Thanks all, it was a DVD authoring program rather than just a program that burns encoded DVD streams to disc... basically a free Nero Vision

Has to be simple, cos my sibling is big grin

I've just found http://www.dvdflick.net/ which looks pretty decent for converting and burning MPEG/AVI etc to a living-room friendly DVD
