Hi all, been trolling the boards a fair bit but not posted on much ...

In feb i was made redundant, i was given quite a heads-up just after christmas that things were bad and to setup new IT systems for a new company at different premises, it felt horrible being in the loop all that time knowing which of your colleagues will be made redundant ... the liquidators came in and closed the place down ... massive shock moving from a purpose built 3 year old big office to a shoddy wee leaking unit and watching millions of £ of stock being auctioned for pennies and mistreated by competitors who delighted in trashing the office Sad ... by that point i had worked day and night alone to setup new IT systems so racked up quite a bit of overtime, a fair amount of redundancy pay (though was penalised a bit because of my age and changes in circumstance) but it gave me the perfect opportunity to go self employed providing IT support. I've been back with the parents saving for a house since october too!

I still cant believe my luck that the situation was so grim but the circumstances allowed me to live cheaply on hefty overtime and redundancy money to get some jobs going. I have 2 permanent support jobs on the go that give me 2.5 -3 days per week, the rest is usually the odd half-day and i'm still onh the lookout for more.

So that's the basics! It hasnt been an easy start to the year, but it's like a dream come true and it all happened so quickly in horrible circumstances!  I just had to tell everyone! big grin big grin big grin

If anyone is thinking about going self employed: I wish I had done it sooner and i count myself very lucky- consider your options, weigh the pro's and con's and then just go for it :-)

yep ... a moderate amount of work should give you survival money all being well ... don't forget (like I always do) to put some aside for your tax though :-)
