I have a domain name with Easily.co.uk but they are chuffing expensive and so I want to transfer it over to 123reg as it's up for renewal in a few months time.

I can't quite figure out how to do it though!

123reg say:

Quote
For the transfer to take place, we will need the most up-to-date email address for the domain’s admin contact (ADMIN-C). If you don't have access to the email address listed in ADMIN-C, then you will need to change it before the transfer can proceed. Most providers will allow you to do this online, though some will need you to email or fax them.

Easily.co.uk say:

Quote
If you proceed, your domain will be removed from your Easily account and from our nameservers. We will also update the Administrative Contact email address for your domain to the one you specify below.

Okay so that's simple enough, I provide an e-mail address to Easily for the Administrative Contact and provide that same address to 123reg. However what if the only e-mail address you have is the one associated to the domain you are transferring, i.e. the domain I'm transferring is my peakoverload.com but that's also my e-mail address. Does that matter or does it have to be a completely separate one?

Also, what happens to my website and e-mails whilst the transfer takes place? I'm assuming that both will go offline at some point but for how long usually does this last?

If the domain name is being transferred but the nameservers are staying the same - ie still pointing to the same hosting you should not go offline.

I would think the domains admin contact is the email address you have on your easily account - ie the mail address easily contact you on for domain renewal etc.

Nothing should go offline, unless they purposely disable the domain which they should have no reason to do. Transfer of .coms takes a few days to go through, and an EPP authorisation code will be generated that you will need to make the request for the domain at your new registrar.

Unless you are also moving your hosting away from Easily then they shouldn't touch your name servers, and even then should only do it once any hosting account is cancelled. And if you don't have your hosting with them then there's less reason for them to touch them.

If you're concerned get a gmail account, or if you want I can create you a temporary account on my domain
