wordpress remove the word category from url

Hi all,

Does anyone know if there is a way to safely remove the word 'category' from the url?
I found a post stating you can put /. into the category base but is that safe?
is there a better way?

i just don't want to have category/category-name i want it to just be /category-name

The /. works to an extent until you try getting onto page 2 of the blog posts from a category page. Same goes for accessing a category specific feed.

My post above covered how to do it so it worked
