I've just had confirmation that I have been awarded a home access grant to buy the children a laptop. There are only a limited range of laptops/desktops available on the scheme and there are only a few suppliers too.

I have narrowed it down to these two laptops but wondered what your opinions were on each before I commit?

Toshiba L450D-12X
AMD SI-42 Sempron 2.1GHz Processor
1GB RAM
160GB SATA Hard Disk Drive
15.6" WXGA High Definition Widescreen Display
SuperMulti CD/DVD-RW Drive
Wireless b/g/n, Ethernet LAN 100MBps
0.3mp Webcam
HDMI, VGA connections
3 x USB 2.0 Ports
4 in 1 Media Card
Mic In
Headphone
Genuine Microsoft Windows 7 Pro Operating System

Or

Samsung R519 notebook

Intel Celeron T3100 Dual Core Processor (1.90GHz)
1GB RAM
160GB SATA Hard Disk Drive
15.6" LED High Definition Widescreen Display
SuperMulti CD/DVD-RW Drive
Wireless b/g/n, Ethernet LAN 100MBps
0.3mp Webcam
VGA connection
3 x USB 2.0 Ports
3 in 1 Media Card Reader
Mic In
Headphone
Genuine Microsoft Windows 7 Pro Operating System

Thanks

I haven't used wither of those brands but I'd recommend ordering more RAM.

Thanks. I'd figured 1GB was a bit lame. I know some of the suppliers do offer the option to upgrade RAM (unfortunately not one of the suppliers I intend ordering from though).

It'd probably be cheaper to get RAM from Crucial anyway.

Amazon carries some very favourable reviews of the Samsung, but even then the model reviewed has 2GB RAM.

Thanks peeps!
I think 2GB of extra RAM is only about £35

I'd go for the samsung and upgrade the ram. Semprons run hotter, noiser and slower the. Intelsat and even though it's an celeron it's still dual core.

Plus it has a card reader which could be useful
