c++
« on: February 03, 2010, 10:47:20 PM »

my work have asked me to start looking into learning c++

i bought the oreilly "programming interactivity" book & downloaded code::blocks (with minGW) & openFrameworks on my battered old windows laptop. unfortunately they're buying me a new mac for compatibility with the rest of the office & my linux desktop machine (which i'd rather use) is too big to lug into london.

the issue is i can't get either of the two first code examples working which is a nightmare because i don't want to start fumbling through the rest of the book in the hope that it makes sense later on. the minGW compiler isn't outputting particularly helpful error messages like php does (either that or i just don't know the common causes for the error messages yet) so i was hoping someone on here might be either be a c++ guru or know of a decent c++ forum / tutorial site? i've googled & googled until my fingers have gone blue but i can't tell what is a good resource or not when it comes to c++.

any suggestions would be happily received smile

First thing I'd do is go to the o'reilly website and look for the book. Sites usually have a section for fixes and addendum. You may find they have fixed versions of the code.

ah, i forgot to mention i already did that, i couldn't find anything about the first 2 examples in the errata.

it's more than likely something i'm doing wrong. the problem is that the book doesn't show you the setup that was used for the tutorials. if the author had put some kind of example directory structure in there then i could at least check that i'm not failing because of a path issue.

think i might have to go through it with a finer toothed comb and see what else i can pick up. i reckon if i was more familiar with the compiler error messages it'd be a lot bloody easier!

cheers sp
