I don't see why we can't have both. An affiliate link stickied somewhere in the forum for members to refer to and use if they remember, and a shop on the front for anyone to buy from. I'm not sure about restricting buying to members with X number of posts, as that will limit the usefulness. It works in large forums where people sell on their used photography gear, for example, and helps to safeguard private sellers, but for a shop to be a viable source of income for DDN I would think it would need to trade publically. Logistically that would mean that DDN would need to do the trading and to pay any shares of the proceeds to donors if applicable.

Affiliate links are good BUT, and not wishing to be the voice of doom here, people WILL forget to use it. As sad as it might be the fact is that most people simply won't do something, at least on a regular or consistent basis, unless it benefits them in some way. That's why I put forward the idea of a DDN shop.

Why not do all of that? As I suggested previously, have a small Amazon shop, or page, or single post and promote books on, for example, website design and development. If visitors are interested they click the link and you get a commission. It works, I do it on my own sites, and Amazon is so well thought out that even if they don't buy the book you're promoting then they'll be lured into buying something else, and you still get the commission.

You can then have an Amazon link as well for people who just want DDN to receive commission for their shopping spree (maybe check Amazons T&C's first to see if they're ok with this).

Mr Anderson's suggesting using Wordpress, and it'll be fairly straightforward to add a little shop and sell DDN related wares. This can easily be integrated into the website once the products are available, and in the meantime some money would be generated via the Amazon links.

[edit] Sorry Mr A, I was writing something similar at the same time wink

I've chucked some cash in as well.

don't know about the shop but anything would help I suppose... the Amazon affiliate would definitely be a good idea tho, I've bought a few things there recently and would have used a DDN link for it all

If you do wish to donate, use the donations link at the top, should find it's way to the DDN coffers.
You'll incur charges that way, if people make a gift payment through their own account to donations @ dotdragnet.com then there should be no charge added.
I've thrown a little something in.

Sounds like you've covered this years costs - can we manage this each year? do we still need pesky adverts?

I'll add something into the pot once I've been paid smile

I'd rather not have advertising but if they're discreet and can cover some of the costs then go for it

I'm more than happy to host DDN on my own servers for minimum/no cost.
I'll stick a bit in thought if we are to continue with hosting!

Cheers - we've all got servers dotted around the place - myself included - but a good few years back we decided not to host on our own servers (I forget why now, maybe someone can remind me?). All donations have been very much appreciated - I know you all know this already, but it's worth reiterating. DDN FTW!

Maybe, for future reference, someone can calculate the avg donation so there is less guilt attached to making one in future - a guide, so to speak?

Wouldn't that potentially cause more guilt? And potentially cause a drop in what's raised.

At the moment we've donated what we wanted to/can afford, but with a figure to aim at anyone who has paid less may feel pressured to pay more to match the average; or that they can't afford that so why bother, which would raise the average further but drop the overall amount. Similarly, anyone paying more may feel that they've overpaid and in future drop to match the average, again that would reduce the overall amount raised.

I still reckon we can raise most of what's needed by having an amazon affiliate link on the site throughout the year. we all buy from amazon (at a guess) and if everyone just spared a thought for DDN and bought through the DDN link once or twice throughout the year then we'd earn enough in affiliate revenue to cover the cost of the hosting. Not adverts needed.

At least, if nothing else, we'd easily make about 50% of it if not more.

Similarly, if a Play.com aff link was added, you could probably run the whole site from my commissions alone! old skool wink Info here...

I know, it's swings and roundabouts. Some, I'm sure, may've stumped up more had they an idea; conversely, some may only have needed to pay less, too; and given the time of year (laden with enough guilt and competing calls on money), I'm sure that might've been a help - but it is what it is.

It's all about spreading the load and we've only so many members.

PS... I don't think ads or aff links would work, FWIW, but it might be worth trying if proponents remember to use them - I'm not a great online shopper meself.

Okay then. A link to Amazon and a link to Play at the top. Everyone agrees and it doesn't cost a penny to put them there.

So... what are we waiting for? Huh?

They would. For a start me and the missus bought a few hundred quids worth of stuff via Amazon over xmas, and it would have only taken a few seconds for us to click the link here first which would have netted DDN ten or twenty quid for doing nothing. I have my own Associates account can't click my own, but happy to click the one on here.

I'd still suggest checking Amazon's T&C's first though, just in case it violates their thing.

We spend around £500 a year on Amazon with presents and stuff for ourselves. At 5% that's £25-£37.50.

This is the excerpt from the Ts and Cs, I don't know whether it really says yes or no, because at the end of the day the link could be there for anyone to use including non-members

You may not purchase products during sessions initiated through the Special Links on your site for your own use or for resale or commercial use of any kind. Such purchases may result (in our sole discretion) in the withholding of referral fees or the termination of this Agreement. Products that are entitled to earn referral fees under the rules set forth above are hereinafter referred to as "Qualifying Products".

I know of other forums that have affiliate links and even amazon shops set up hoping for members to just do their shopping through it.
