Just bought a usb hub, as the new laptop only has 2 usb ports. When I try to connect my Iomega portable external drive, the drive just beeps continually and isn't recognised. It works fine when connected straight to the laptop.

Any ideas why this should happen?

Is it a powered hub? Not all of them provide sufficient charge to run a drive from. If it isn't then you'll need to use one of the laptop's ports, or check to see if there's an additional usb cable for the drive, as some drives will come with a second to allow it to receive an additional charge from the hub, or if there's a power pack for the drive.

That'll be it. It's not powered. The drive has two usb cables, and i've always used both as I assumed it was necessary on my netbook. On this laptop it seems to work fine with only one. So I guess there's no need for the other cable. So I guess there's no need for the hub I've just bought.

Thanks
