I remember being asked if I wanted a free store card when buying some bits from JB Sports, the sweetener being 10% off my purchase. They put my details through but told me unfortunately there was a problem with my credit rating so I couldn't have a card, and therefore no discount. There was no problem with my payment going through though.

About a week later the store card I'd been refused turned up on the doormat.

I think they make it up as they go along.

This thread has proved very useful as I'm going through the same dilemma.

Now that you have finally made the decision, have you managed to keep your old number?

I only had a T-Mobile PAYG Wilber so wasn't bothered about keeping the number. As I said earlier, the nice man at Vodafone promised to "get me a good number".  blink

ps I'll get teh cheque in the post.  banana

That's pretty easy Wilbo. Ask your current network for the PAC code, then when you sign up with a new network give them that PAC number and it'll happen automagically. When the new phone arrives it will have your existing number on the sim. I've gone from Orange to Vodafone to O2 over the years and keeping the number has always worked fine.

Trouble is with keeping your number, you don't always get the good deals. I'm on the edge of getting a new doodaa phone, but it'll be a work one and the only 'recommended' smart phones are the blackberries - and then it's a limited range, don't really want one of them as they get locked down too much - considering the HTC touch pro as that's windows and can run notes traveller or a palm treo pro, but the screen and keys look too squashed on those.

iPhone not an option as we are with VF corp.

Yup, I'm aware of that as I've done it myself, just wondered if Mr Y had done the same.

Spoke to him yesterday evening and what did I not ask him?

Dead right, "what is your new number?"  It'll be with the cheque.

The phone's arrived but I've been too busy refurbing a wooden picnic table to even have a play with it, let alone find out the number. Now I have to have a shower or I'll get my nice new phone all poo up.  Sad

Well I've had a tiny bit of a play with the HTC Touch Pro 2 now (much to Mrs Y's irritation). And so far:

Pluses

The pull-out keyboard is brilliant. Much much easier to use than the Blackberry Storm screen equivalent. The camera is excellent as well, even has a self timer. Wifi capability. Customisable. Looks more blokey than gaylord iPhone.  old skool wink

Minuses

Screen 'finger flicking' will take some getting used to. Easy to touch 'power off' key by accident. Camera could do with a flash.

Talked to an assistant at Carphone Warehouse today about iPhones who looked up my details and told me I'd only get a 28k (half dial up) speed connection to the internet on one as there's no 3g available in my area (and there never will be, ever).

So...I've already got a mobile (albeit an old one), I've got a good camera/video recorder, I've got an ipod, I'll have better browsing speeds via my laptop...so....good reasons for buying an iPhone are getting a bit thin on the ground. Then again, it's got a compass...

Even better...that should be enough to convince Mrs Curtains that it's worth spending £500 on - you never know when you're going to need a compass, or a spirit level when you're out!

but the last place I ever use the iPhone for 3g web access is at home, it just uses our wi-FI network there. 3g's only used to get online when out and about. The version of Safari on it does a pretty good job of crunching down the data as well so browsing on a normal network is ok on the phone. Tethering is useless without a faster signal though.

More or less the whole of the area around where I live doesn't get 3G, it'd be interesting to see how fast it is with a normal network though.
