Apologies, not the nicest of topics...

There's a stain in the base of my lav under the waterline. It's been there since I moved in.

Any advice for shifting it? I've used a whole bottle of Harpic Max and it's not made a dent.

Someone once told me to use Coke as the acidic nature of it dissolves most things, use the bog brush to get most of the water out then pour a couple of litres of coke in.

Not sure if el cheapo coke works as good as the proper stuff, i'd probably try el cheapo first though.

Marigolds, bleach and a scourer should do the trick. If you have an aversion to putting your hands down the toilet then you can get a scourer on a stick from an aquatic/pet shop.

If that fails then caustic soda is your next best bet.

Great post Jon! I have been following the effort since you started it, and although I have understood its purpose this post does a really great job solidifying the full rationale.

Hoping to to be too graphic but it depends what the stain is really?

Coke is a good suggestion and does work - depending on the nature of the stain.

White Vinegar and Bicarbonate of soda (either used individually or if mixed together it causes a reaction and is good at moving blockages and stains in hard to reach places).

Dettol make a mould and mildew remover that is very powerful and I have a feeling they do a similar one for limescale too.

Be very very careful if you use caustic soda. It's evil stuff. When I was working at the soap kitchen we used to sell kilos and kilos of it and if you got the tiniest little bit on your skin you knew about it.

Failing all else you might need to get your hand in there with a pumice stone and scrub away at it.

Good luck  Roll Eyes

Could be the enamel at that point is knackered, in which case bleach can whiten it.

If not then you'll likely need some form of acidic cleaner and some elbow grease.

Right! Coke in the loo, and not in an 80s party kinda way.

Will be adding the 'Domestos Grot Buster' later.

Sorry for the delay matey, been away for short break in Yorkshire.

Anyhow...

Limescale is the swine of the bogs. Beat that and there's not much else to worry about (unless the enamel is knackered and its new bog time)

Try some Harpic 100% Limescale Remover. It may need a few applications (ie using a reasonable brush also) before you get results.

Failing that, a reasonable new bog would probably set you back around £60, probably less if you were just replacing the pan and a direct replacement was still available.

Cheers Mr Y. The coke just made it darker, so hoping the grot buster does the trick. If it doesn't I'll go for the Harpic.

New loo sounds a bit drastic. Sure I'll figure something out before it gets to that.

Success! The grot buster did exactly what it said on the bottle. Very impressed.

For future reference, this is the stuff. Recommended.
