I may be being a complete 'tard here, but after many years away from it I've gone back to Outlook (2003 as its the only one I have) to simplify our business contacts, work calendar, etc. but the mail element is driving me mad. I'm sure this is really really basic stuff but:

  • How do you get it to show you the sender's e-mail address in an e-mail, mainly so I can copy it to something else if needed or even just to see if it looks genuine? (e.g. we occasionally get competitors asking for quotes from some odd hotmail address so just seeing their name rather than sender's e-mail doesn't help - I need to see the address its come from). No matter what I've tried I can't get it to show me anything other than their name. If I right click on the name and select copy it just copies their name and there is no 'copy e-mail address' option, double clicking their name does nothing, etc.
  • Every time I open an attachment it asks if I really want to do that and no matter how many times is tick 'don't show me this message, just open the bloody thing' the next time it asks me all over again
  • And lastly, when it opens a Word document, it does it in some bizzre reder view rather than print view. Its easy enough to then click print view but its most annoying and Mrs. S has already got confused about documents not looking right and being split over two pages when they're really on one. How do you make it just open it in the normal print view?dry

Adam,

Item 1, right click the email then options then you'll get the headers. When using exchange it needs a hack to show this as Exchange doesn't forward this info on as standard.

Not sure on the others but there are quite a few bugs with 2003 such as it wont automatically expand folders with new email in as it should.

Hi Paul,

Not sure whats going on but if I right click on the e-mail in the inbox and select options I just get a window with stuff like tracking and delivery options.  Can't see any way to see the e-mail address at all in it?? There is a box with 'Internet headers' as the title but its always empty.

No exchange server here - just via POP from Google.

There must be a way to do something as basic as viewing and, if you want to, copying the sender's e-mail addy but I'm still being a retard on this?dry

Excessive swearing is about to erupt. Even if I press reply it just puts the sender's name in the 'to' box and won't show me their e-mail address. I may have to resort to kicking the dog.

Whenever I click to reply on emails I always have the person's name and email display in the To box, no need to go clicking. The only time it doesn't display is when there is no reply to email I think. What do you see when you just open the email as I also see their details in the From section.

The message header under right click -> options should look something like:

You should be able to see in the centre bit the from, reply-to and to details.

Not sure about the other issues. I've got the same as you with Word but I figured that was a Word issue.

Hi Sarah,

When I open and e-mail and click reply, if the original sender's name was only shown in the inbox then that's all that is then shown in the 'to' box - no e-mail address is shown and there is no right click option to show it, copy anything other than just the basic name, etc. If I actually send the mail it goes and gets there no problem.

If I open a received e-mail all I see is the person's name in the 'from' area. Again, no way to get to see the e-mail address behind it, copy it, etc.

Right clicking the message and selecting options doesn't give me anything like the stuff you've posted. I get some gubbins about message settings (all greyed out as its received rather than sent so isn't relevant) and then there is a box headed 'Internet headers' but that is always blank - never anything in it at all. I've looked at loads of different messages in the inbox, from loads of different senders, and that box is always blank.

The headers posted above were from a received message not a sent one, and you should always get something like that either by right clicking on the message in the inbox and clicking on options, it'll appear in a box at the bottom, or opening the message and going to View -> Options.

Sounds like either a plugin is interfering or the install isn't right. I've looked through all the options and can't see a way to make the emails display which leads me to believe they should be displaying.

The only thing I can suggest is under the inbox right click on one of the column headers eg. 'From' and click on Customise current view. Then click on Fields. In the top left drop down select All Mail Fields and then add the option 'Have replies sent to' from the left to right column. This will then display the Reply-To address if one exists or is set. So it won't display for every email but it may help a little.

Ta for plugging away at it. smile

Honestly though, if I right click on any recieved message in the inbox and select Options, its blank. Nothing there on any of them. I also just opened a recived mail and went to view > options and again, its blank. Nowt there.

Just tried customizing the current view as suggested to show the 'have replies sent to' option displayed and you guess it, all blank again...

Sounds like it's all being stripped out. You mentioned you're downloading from Google via pop, do all your emails go to Google or are they GMail? It could be down to Google. Do you have a pop account with your site or one you can test. If not I can give you a temp one and try emailing it and see if it's any different.

It may be worth checking to work out if it's Google or your Outlook.

Try right clicking on the sender name - that's how entourage shows email addresses.

Outlook hates me. No way to see the e-mail address from right clicking their name. Open an email and right click and the only non-greyed out option is 'select all' and that just copies their name rather than the e-mail address. right clicking their name in the inbox (without opening the mail) doesn't help either. May have to move away from Outlook again Sad

Sarah: Don't know if this is of any use to you, but this switches off the opening in reading view rather than actual view in word:

Quote
If you don't want to use reading layout view for e-mail attachments, clear the Allow starting in Reading Layout check box on the General tab of the Options dialog box (Tools menu).

O2007 ( and indeed the whole MS Office 2007) is much better then 2003. Bit of a learning curve, but your missing out on a lot if you havent got it.

Just make sure you dont buy the Office student and teacher edition, as that doesnt include outlook.

With 2007 you have to bear in mind that MS made the decision to abandon CSS support in HTML emails, and so any you receive that have been coded with modern techniques will be liable to fall apart. Instead they now think that Word is the right tool for marking up and presenting HTML.

that's the same as with 2003 isn't it? Have to use tables to lay out successfully in either case. Bastards!

I believe it was 2007 when they retrograde implemented it, and are continuing with it in the next version with the argument that it makes email better for everyone.

Out of interest, how would that work if someone has Outlook but not M$ Office so no Word, (or Works)?

The same as the rendering mechanism would be built in to it. At a guess.
