i think my brakes are seized Sad i am finally out of my cast after 10 weeks and went to drive my car but i think my brakes are seized there is a grating noise when i try to drive and more so when i brake. the car does move but its  scary noise. and its not a constant grating noise either its more like once every rotation. is there anything i can do or how to check for this? i know pretty much nothing about cars. i soooo want to drive again.

Try applying some oil to the discs surface.

It can be either general corrosion built up on the brakes and / or the handbrake seized on.

General corrosion on the brakes should clear itself after a short time.

For the handbrake just drive along slowly and apply and release the handbrake, if it's not seized then you should notice the difference.

And don't forget you also get a grating sound when the pads/shoes get too low! But this does appear gradually.

WHS. If I leave my car for a week the disks start to rust a bit. After a short drive using the brakes regularly and smoothly the pads clean the rust off and bite the discs better. That said, 10 weeks is a long time. I'd be tempted to clean the disks up with some medium wetordry paper first.

Another thought. If your car is still under manufacturers warranty they might give you new disks. Subaru did for my Forester.  smile
