HI All,

Just wondered whether anyone could recommend a laptop for the wife around the £400 mark? I did see this one http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164845. Anyone got any thoughts on it or any recommendations?

Wife got a new job which starts in September but wanted a laptop to check her web stuff (emails, banking browsing), and perhaps a bit of photo stuff.

Cheers

The Dell Inspiron's pretty good for £399: http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-inspiron-1545?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&ref=lthp

I recently bought one for my missus and she's pleased with it, apart from the Dell bloatware.

HP laptops are good though, I use a DV5 which is a bit more expensive but really good performance for the price.

We have had two of these, and love them - they do exactly what they say on the tin.

Thanks for the feedback guys... wife does like the specs on the HP. I had problems with Dell that went on for weeks after I bought my new one last year.... will wait another day or two before making any final decisions.... and as I read out your comments, she's decided to go for the HP.....

Cheers
Andy

For some reason I ignored the £400 when first reading this thread's title, and thought you wanted to swap your wife for a laptop  blink

I'd also recommend HP laptops. I've got a G70. It was a recon for £380 (no HP packaging or manuals, but machine is untouched and has 12 month warranty), and lacks a few higher end features, but does have blueray, HDMI, fast cpu, proper numeric keypad and 17" screen.

The HP's don't come with too much bloat to uninstall and are very nice to use.

Bought it from Dixons after laptopsdirect let me down.

Great post Jon! I have been following the effort since you started it, and although I have understood its purpose this post does a really great job solidifying the full rationale.

Surely I'd want a backup drive as well?

For a wee bit over £400 we buy the Lenovo N500s, which are nice, solid, do-as-they're-told pieces of kit.  Come with Vista Business too, so you can stick XP on them and not feel guilty. old skool wink

I thought the exact same thing. I'd consider it but I'd need to see photos first.

I had problems with Dell that went on for weeks after I bought my new one last year....

Yeah we did too: they swapped the processor for a lower specced version in the order confirmation email and when my wife called to complain they shouted at her, which has happened to me too when I had problems with my desktop. Delivery was late and we nearly cancelled at one point.

Despite all that though we were pleasantly surprised by the performance and build of the laptop which was a lot better than most of the competition we'd tried, the drawback being Dells appalling 'customer service'. Screen isn't great but as good anything in that price range.

I'm very happy with the HP though. Only issue was the lack of a backup disk - you have to create your own using their software, which didn't work (seemed to be a common issue after visiting a few forums), so I had to call support, who were very polite and helpful and sent out a couple of disks a few days later.

Sounds like a good deal. I initially bought a Macbook Pro but couldn't get on with the weird mouse acceleration thing that Macs have so I sent it back and bought my HP for a third of the price. I was amazed at how close the performance was between the two and apart from build quality and OS there wasn't much between them...apart from the £800 extra cost.

I think mine's got the 'brightview tft' option like yours, and if that's the case you've got a really good screen there.

Had one of these delivered again late last week, sent it out today to teacher with XP on. Cracking little machine.
