FInally look like I might have enough cash to buy a cheap laptop but I'm wondering if a netbook would be better.

Predominantly would prob use it for internet access a few word docs and maybe watching a dvd or two .... that said, my PC is getting on a bit so it may be a handy back up just in case ... in that case I guess a laptop would be best though I like the portability of a netbook .... any thoughts and any idea of a decent cheap laptop ?

Netbooks don't have DVD drives so if you wanted to watch movies then you'd need to rip them or buy an external drive. Also the screen will be a good bit smaller.

i have a Samsung netbook and i love but as sickpuppy states it doesn't have a dvd drive.  i do have office on it and do watch a few movies that i have on the hardrive. it only has a 10 inch screen. i find it really useful when travelling around for checking emails and any last minute things i need to sort but wouldn't use it as a main machine although i had to for a while over christmas and it was too bad for that short time.

A guy in work with me has the Samsung NC10 and loves it although it is one on the more expensive netbooks.
I bought my other half a Lenovo S10 and i can't get her off the thing.

I'll stick in a vote for the NC10, although I hate the trackpad - it's awful. Everything else is good. I do find the keyboard limiting, but no more than a full size laptop. Some of the cheaper/smaller netbooks have it far worse for key pitch etc.

Asus eee 901 http://uk.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=1sRO7tW9B0OdR9yz

Absolutely love it. Only bought it for ultra portability for field research, but end up relying on it for allsorts. Not much memory, but that's not what it's for really. Just get a portable hard drive.

They seem to be the top 3. I like the look of the Sammy NC10, although there have been some questions over it's nano-silver keyboard (more from a health perspective than anything else). All I want it for is sitting on the sofa, surfing the web/checking emails. I might stick it in my bag occasionally, or even run a small webserver off it, but nothing too high performance.
