If I want to apply a hover equivalent to an list item, I recall it being done as a class. How do I attach it to the top level of my list items?

I don't understand your question... what do you mean by the "top level of my list items"?

Maybe whatever:hover might be relevant to you, I'm not sure...

I thought IE6 only supported :hover on links?

If so then you'd need to have a link which takes up all the space and make it have the hover styling, or use JS

I've actuallyreworked my HTML/CSS to get around this now but I needed to follow what Dave was suggesting using JS. The link Pete supplied does something very similar but is a little overkill for what I wanted. I just wanted a simple JS hover equivalent for IE6 as Dave correclty states, you can't put hover on non-link elements
